T3 & weight gain

Hi everyone

I currently take 75mcg of cynomel. I am really struggling with my weight. I also have diabetes type 2.

I haven’t had my B12 & iron tested for a long time. The GP ordered B12, Iron, Vit D tests.

I have got my B12 & iron test back. I do not supplement for b12 & for iron I used to take bluebonnet 27mg high strength tablets. I have recently switched (2 weeks ago) to Solgar gentle iron 25mg. (I avoided taking iron 6 days prior to having my bloods).

My results are:

Serum vitamin B12 level 613 ng/L [211.0 - 911.0]

Note new B12 reference range 03/06/13

Serum ferritin level 90 ug/L [10.0 - 291.0]

Serum folate level 3.3 ug/L [3.0 - 14.4]

My question is could this be a reason why my t3 is not being utilized properly in my body.

What are your TSH, Ft4 and Ft3 levels

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

If/when on T3, make sure to take last third or half of daily dose 8-12 hours prior to test, even if this means adjusting time or splitting of dose day before test

Is this how you do your tests?

Folate obviously very low

Supplementing a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in not folic acid may be beneficial.

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Igennus Super B is good quality and cheap vitamin B complex. Contains folate. Full dose is two tablets per day. Many/most people may only need one tablet per day. Certainly only start on one per day (or even half tablet per day for first couple of weeks)

Or Thorne Basic B or jarrow B-right are other options that contain folate, but both are large capsules

If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before any blood tests, as biotin can falsely affect test results

You need vitamin D tested

Do you have Hashimoto’s?

Is your T3 prescribed or do you source it yourself? Think I’d be wondering whether I’d got my mitts on the genuine article if 75mcg didn’t seem to be doing much—but I’ve seen the odd person here who needed a higher dose...

What are your thyroid tests looking like? What’s your FT3 level?

It’s not prescribed. I source it myself.

I am due to have private bloods taken as my GP will not test FT3.

Do you split T3 into 2 or 3 doses or taking as single dose

Are you on strictly gluten free diet?

If not, suggest you try it
