Wound healing Problems.

Hi all. Hope everyone is staying safe and well.

I injured my shin a year ago, and it has still not healed properly. Also several other small injuries.

I am having problems with wound healing. I wonder if I am lacking in certain vitamins. If so, does anyone know what I should be taking for skin healing.

I am autoimmune hypothyroidism, and have PA. I was also diagnosed with subcutaneous Lupus/Sjogrens. But the rheumatologist said it was a false positive. I still have all the symptoms. And feel something is wrong.

I don't really want to go back to the doctor, because I have no faith in them anymore, because of all the battles you have to go through. And then get nowhere.

Mannequin18 - Would healing can be the result of many things from nutritional deficiencies, to blood issues, to circulatory problems, to high blood sugars, to taking oral steroid, or even apllication of steroid creams, and of course many other reasons - some simple, some less so.

Were I in your shoes, my first stop would be to my GP to ask them to have a look at the woounds, to ensure there are no lingering, low grade infections, or poor circulation or any obvious reason, on sight, but then to have a broad panle of bloods, including the vitamins and minerals.

Pesonally, I wouldn't be too happy with a wound not properly healed after a couple of months, without a decent and credible explanation.

Whilst many of us feel the need to gird our loins before going to our GPs, and likely even moreso in the current climate; they are there to do a job, and other things are happening in the world than COVID, and people still need to be treated for their ails.

My vote would be to make that call and schedule something with your GP.

Thank you. You are right, I should make an appointment to see them. I don't think an online appointment would do, as they need to see what is going on.

Thank you again

Leg ulcers are common problem, ...notoriously difficult to heal on shin .....especially as we get older..

Probably needs professional medical attention and often needs regular dressing by practice nurse

Thank you.

They did all of that, and antibiotics last year. I haven't seen them since November.

It's just not completely healed, and there is pain around and deep where the injury was. And other minor injuries, are just not quite healing. I wondered if I had a problem absorbing vitamins. I have a good diet. All fresh foods. Perhaps I should supplement, but if I am not absorbing there is no point. I don't know if doctors test vitamin absorption. I will have to look into it.

Thank you.

As you have Hashimoto’s and PA it’s highly likely you need to supplement

How much levothyroxine are you currently taking

Do you always get same brand of levothyroxine

Are you getting B12 injections ok during pandemic

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested.

Also EXTREMELY important to regularly test vitamin D, folate, ferritin

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, with Hashimoto’s

Ask GP to test vitamin D, folate and ferritin levels

When were thyroid levels last tested

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

Is this how you do your tests?

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or thyroid antibodies or all relevant vitamins

Hi, thank you for your detailed reply. I take 150micrograms of Actavis. It's the only one that I tolerate. Fortunately I am getting my B12 injections at the surgery, and I also self inject monthly. I still have balance problems and tinnitis. Stabbings and pins and needles. I had my ears tested and they are fine, so I think it must be B12. My levels are always high.

I had my thyroid checked at Medichecks last year. They said it was okay. Although some of the markers were near the high Mark. My thyroid was checked by GP in November last year. They didn't say there was a problem. But the results showed that I had either Sjogrens or Subcutaneous Lupus. But the rheumatologist said it was a false positive because I already had other autoimmune diseases.

I will ask the surgery to do the vitamin checks that you mention. I didn't know that they did that.

Why don't they check these things, when they know you have autoimmune diseases.

Thank you for your advice, I will contact them tomorrow.

Many people who have B12 injections find it helps to also Supplement a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in not folic acid may be beneficial.

chriskresser.com/folate-vs-...

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Igennus Super B is good quality and cheap vitamin B complex. Contains folate. Full dose is two tablets per day. Many/most people may only need one tablet per day. Certainly only start on one per day (or even half tablet per day for first couple of weeks)

Or Thorne Basic B or jarrow B-right are other options that contain folate, but both are large capsules

If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before any blood tests, as biotin can falsely affect test results
