Hi everyone - moving house and emptying the bookcase I find a book I never looked at !!! I know ..............it is called Thyroid Healing by Anthony William - wow just looked at page 43 which explains why people put on weight or don't lose it after taking thyroid meds - it explains how the liver is heavily involved with a low thyroid problem and then to have medication thrown at it slows it down even more - he also has a theory on auto immune thyroid issues being a virus that caused it to start off - I have always believed this - why is the immune system reacting to the thyroid - because there must be a bug or virus there that it is trying to fight. It covers all the illnesses that this condition presents and foods to help heal.
Worth a look.

Hi - The field of endocrinology is way behind and not at all up to date with their own subject. And in answer to your question - I would not be alive today - without being melodramatic - if I had not read and researched this subject and accepted the wisdom of authors who think outside of the box - I might read a book where the author might not be telling me something I didn't already know by my own research - but then I see a line or a paragraph that put another piece in the whole jigsaw of my health issues. For example Tears Behind Closed Doors - I read the book cover to cover and the lady concerned was experiencing the same issues I was - she is not a medical person just a woman who suffered with extreme symptoms - at that time no-one would listen to me - that I thought my issues were thyroid related - then all of a sudden I read in that book a line that said - 'and I had a swollen stomach as if I was 9 months pregnant - that did it - I then went hell for leather to get someone to listen to me -as I was unable to get any clothes to fit me and had to wear maternity clothes or men's tracksuits etc. as I was so swollen. I was always fobbed off that the swollen abdomen was down to something else. I lost my career and gave up my job because I could not dress in the suitable attire for my role. There are few documents that actually state this - one in particular was written in the days when they knew what their subject was - around 1850 - another example - I have a kidney issue and my kidneys were always swollen - when I finally went onto thyroid medication - my consultant was amazed that they had gone down in size to normal - I then went on to the internet and found the science behind what had happened to me and sent to my renal consultant re the thyroid/kidney connection and he was amazed - I went on to send him numerous thyroid docs and he used them at conferences etc. - in my opinion the field of Endocrinology are holding back medicine - my Mother's enlarged heart went down to normal size after being put on thyroid hormone at aged 80. How many heart specialists would know this connection.
Quote: Thyroid hormones affect the development and physiology of the kidneys. As a result, thyroid dysfunction can affect renal blood flow, glomerular filtration rate, tubular function, electrolyte homeostasis, and kidney structure (5) . Similarly, kidney disease can have a negative effect on thyroid health. " Unquote
One of the finest books ever written on thyroid health and the diseases it causes in my opinion is - Solved the Riddle of Illness.
The paragraph I read today which you are commenting on - said the liver was heavily involved in low thyroid function - which I knew - I have not been able to drink for over 50 years - as I am allergic to it - even one glass was enough to make me go yellow. But..........the other line he offered was that on top of the usual problems with the liver running slow because of low thyroid hormone - it does not get much better when you then throw thyroid medication etc. at the liver which is already compromised. The paragraph was relating to stubborn weight gain when on thyroid hormone - that is what I found interesting and answered a query for me - every time I take a hormone or supplements I swell up - he has now alerted me to the fact that it is my liver that needs attention and not necessarily anything else like the kidneys etc. - everything has to be cleared by the liver and kidneys - so I am now aware of the core problem that needs dealing with before I will ever lose weight.
Hi, I have a swollen stomach too, but my liver and kidney numbers are fine and they were not swollen earlier in the year with ultrasound, except my eGFR is currently 51.46.
I am tested every three month because I have Lupus and my liver levels are fine too. It goes deeper than that. Going to do some research and will post shortly.
No use relying on so called evidence . We need to explore all views with an intelligent approach . Research papers are good to read but not as the only source . As you say people’s own experience is just as useful if not more
So.
I to am considered melodramatic by professionals who would rather I meakly listen and get fobbed off !!!!
Keen to hear more about this. What helps treat the liver.
I think you’re right the Endo profession holds itself back. A lot of the clinicians also carry out the research and choose the easy options.
Also there’s very little funding for research as there’s no money to be made from generic thyroid hormones. Drugs companies pump millions into diabetes research so they can commercialise expensive treatment, so the best researchers are focussed on that area.
Don’t worry about the naysayers on here, if there’s a treatment protocol that could work we should consider it regardless of clinical research being unavailable. Of course we should use common sense and not try anything outright dangerous.
HI there - it isn't holding itself back it is holding back the medical profession - if you read Solved the Riddle of Illness - which I did early on - you would be shocked what the thyroid or lack of the hormone to keep it going can cause - it is outrageous that the field of Endocrinology is not divulging this information to their colleagues and I send e mails to Professor's across the globe in my fight for them to recognise the thyroid as being the cause of a b c that they might be researching to find an answer.
Long haul covid - I have written to the Professor who is researching why this is happening and sent her details of an Italian study showing it is the thyroid being inflamed after covid that is causing the debilitating post viral effects.
I can see quite clearly because I am what I would call a thyroid spotter - that most of the people if not all - who struggle with Covid 19 are undiagnosed thyroiders - I held my breath when I heard footballer Rinaldo had caught the virus because he is a diagnosed thyroid patient and his neck was really bad - such swelling - but wasn't surprised when they said although he has tested positive his viral load is next to minimal. So my theory is - if your thyroid is well supported then you get a mild version if not you can get into trouble. It is obvious to me that the thyroid and adrenal glands would be put under extreme pressure when so ill. Common sense.
Will get back to you all tomorrow re liver issues.
That's nice of you to say - I used to go and see Dr Hertoghe in Belgium for nearly 10 years - I also used to communicate with him on my research regularly - he was good on hormones but not so good on the nutritional side - so he would often ask me to send him my research on illness brought about by deficiencies - which I did regularly - when I finished going to him he told me - you know as much as I do on hormones and nutrition - go out and help others - and that is what I try to do. It has become a hobby now trying to get the medical profession to recognise that the thyroid/adrenals or indeed vitamin and mineral deficiencies are probably the root cause of most illness and disease states - I read a book where the author said it was his dream to see 25 mcg of thyroid hormone given to every sick patient by IV to help them get over their illness - I think I second his thoughts on that.
It took me 13 years to get on thyroid hormone because my blood tests showed my levels were so called normal and in those days they would not prescribe it. Everything I did to keep alive I did myself by looking at the symptoms - so if something happened I would put into the internet - 'what vitamin and mineral deficiency causes' or what hormonal deficiency causes' and got through those 13 years by the skin of my teeth - feeding the body with the vits and mins that were going deficiency because the thyroid was needing them - if that makes sense. My theory is that most if not all illness is a deficiency state - whether that be a hormonal one or a vitamin or mineral deficiency - after all the word disease means - dis-ease of the body.
Hence why I don't rely on scientific papers in the first instance but my own experience - the science came later if I could find it.
Very interesting. Do you use the same testing websites recommended on here for vit/mineral deficiencies & thyroid 'score'? I'm new to all this having just been diagnosed (borderline underactive). The only symptoms I have is tiredness, weight gain, struggling to lose it and bouts of depression. Which I thought were COVID isolation/lockdown related! I have very thick hair and no loss, good skin & nails. I've had very good health and in my 60's.
