The T3 in your blood is either Free, or bound to proteins. Your body can only use the Free T3. If you get a Total T3 test, it tests both Free and bound T3, without telling you how much you have of each. But, what your really want to know is how much T3 is available for you body to use. That's why the Free T3 test is better.
Here in France, I've been 'incarcerated' at home for over a month now. Two weeks compulsory, and the rest voluntary, because I'm over 70.
I asked my dr to do t3 free, he only ordered t3 total, he wants to know why I want t3 free done. Blood test today afternoon.
We often see just Total T3 tests done with our US members but here in the UK it's considered an outdated test. Total T3 measures the total amount of T3, both bound to proteins and unbound (free). We can have a good Total T3 amount but poor Free T3 amount. Free T3 tests just the unbound amount of T3 and this is what is available to the cells and it's the result of the Free T3 test that tells us whether we are adequately treated, under treated or over treated. I don't know how you can convince your doctor of this.
