Confused by new blood results

Hi all.

I had my new thyroid blood test results and I'm a bit confused.

TSH is suppressed as expected.

My T4 is 19.8 range 12 to 22

T3 is 7.7 range 3.1 to 6.8

My T3 is very high over range, and what confuses me is I'm not feeling hyper but at all. Nothing much has changed since January mood wise, energy or anything.

I'm currently on 25mcg t3 cynomel and 150 mcg eltroxin.

I also take 4000iu vit d and k2 daily as well as b complex once a day.

What would you suggest I do?

Thank you in advance.

I never felt "hyper" either when mine was over range.

Maybe reduce your T3 to get your FT3 back into range. Go down to 3/4 of a Cynomel tablet. Retest 6-8 weeks later to see where your levels lie then.

My response is based on my own experience, I'm not medically trained.

However, on 26th February you posted that you'd been on antibiotics for an infection and should you do your test, I replied:

But it's the throat infection that you should be mindful of. We shouldn't do any thyroid tests when we have, or recently had, an acute infection, wait a few weeks until it's completely cleared.

Presumably you've only waited 2 weeks or even less?

However again, on 16th January you posted results and asked about increasing Levo from 125mcg to 150mcg and leaving T3 at 25mcg. I replied:

I personally would be increasing Levo. All you can do is try it and see if it's right for you. Retest after 6-8 weeks to see what your levels are like then and how you feel. You might find that your FT3 will also increase, depending on how much natural conversion you have.

It's possible that you normal conversion is good enough for the extra Levo to not only increase your FT4 but to increase your FT3 as well, in which case maybe you need that amount of Levo but a lesser amount of T3. As I said before, it's a case of tweaking doses to find the right level of each for you.

Hi Seasidesusie.

I waited a bit more than a week yes as I felt the infection was completely cleared and felt better. May be it wasn't long enough.

Thank you for the advice. I might try to reduce my levo back to 125mcg first and see if the levels go back to range. As I am not sure how I can cut the pill in 3/4, as it's hard enough already to cut in even halves.

I really thought the cynomel would make a difference and it's frustrating when you are not getting where you want to be.

I think you retested far too early after your infection, it is suggested to wait a few weeks after an acute infection as I suggested before.

I manage to cut 25mcg Unipharma tablets into quarters. I use a Safe and Sound pill cutter but some people do better with a sharp craft scalpel.

Not sure when you started T3 but in your post 3 months ago you said you were on NDT. I don't want to depress you but it took me about 18 months of tweaking Levo and T3 before I found the hormone levels that suited me and the doses I need.

I started the t3/t4 straight after my last blood test in January. I was taking 3 grains, converted to the equivalent on synthetic. I know it takes time, but I was hoping for some sort of little improvements 😢. I'll get there eventually...

How long a gap did you leave between your last dose of T3 and the blood draw?

I took my last dose of t3 the day before around 5pm as usual. I did the blood test at 7.30 am the next day.

OK, so you left more than the recommended 12 hours. So, it's possible that your FT3 could actually be even higher than that. Not by much, but it's something to ponder.

Think you need to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

See exactly where these levels are

Remember to stop taking any supplements that contain biotin a week before any blood tests (eg most vitamin B complex)

Biotin can falsely affect test results
