If you currently have 150mg of thyroxine per day

What would be the equivalent of NDT . I’m due a an appointment with and endocrinologist and just want to be armed with as much information as possible and not be fobbed off

Thanks

I was on 150 levo

Now take 2 grains NDT Thyroid-s

For me, any more or any less is less satisfactory.

The most suitable answer for anybody else would be that it all depends on the patient, probably between 1-3 based upon how the patient feels. The 2 products cannot be directly compared as one is a single synthetic chemical, the other a group of natural hormones.

Compare them using the weight of the active ingredients if you like, but doing that you end up with highly dubious results.

Hi

This is spot on and sensible information.

It is 74 mg per ndt. Like Panda321 I am on thyroid s. I found it stronger than t3 and t4. I was on a hefty dose of thyroxine. However everyone is different and I’d suggest using a basal thermometer and working to 36.50 degrees. ( see drmyhill.co.uk and search under orchestra in the top right hand corner of the home page. )

The only slight downside is if you have a substantially different % through one range. As the ndt is a set amount at 38 mcg Levo and 9 liothyronine some people find they may have to add a bit of t3 or t4 in.

Good luck

There is no really right answer as the two don't align well. Most people when "optimal" have raised their NDT to alot more than they could tolerate Levo. On NDT "optimal" basically means a completely suppressed TSH. This cranks up your metabolism, you loose weight, look good and have lots of energy. But I don't know how good it really is for you long term. I'm back on Levo after 4 years on NDT because it was attacking my tendons at the dose I was taking, and I couldn't just take a little less because my joints screamed if they didn't get their 180mg or 3 grains of NDT per day. I'm back on 75mcg of Levo. This is equivalent to 90mg NDT or 1.5 grains.

There are plenty of Levo/NDT conversion tables online - but understand they are just a rough guide.

NDT you tune on how you feel, not blood tests, they are just to keep the GP off your back.

150mcg of levothyroxine is T4 alone that converts to T3. Keep in mind - rather than the dosing - is 'how we feel' on a particular dose which is gradually increased until we're symptom-free.

1 grain of NDT is stated to have the 'effect' of 100mcg levothyroxine but that could vary a little depending on the patient's body. NDTcontains, as I'm sure you know contains all of the hormones a healthy gland would do. This link may be helpful:-

Was on 100mg levothyroxine but did not feel well on it. In December 2018 started NDT.Now I am taking 2 and 1/4 grains of NDT. Feel very good.

I'm glad you've found NDT suits you. It is the gradual increases that allows us to find a dose which relieves clinical symptoms.
