Hashimoto

I've been on levothyroinxe for about 10 months. During the past week, I've forgotten to take my tablets. I've now got clammy hands and feet, heart racing, head feels like it's going ten to the dozen. I've got a blood test booked for the start of august, and the doctor has just put me on beta-blockers. When I saw the consultant, he said it might be hashimoto's as I'd got positive antibodies. Is this what hashimoto's does, does it make you go from underactive to overactive etc?

I was initially diagnosed with thyroiditis, although I don't think I was ever told if it was Hashimoto's thyroiditis. If you take a look at my blood test graph at healthunlocked.com/thyroidu... you'll see a spike right at the beginning, which is where I initially went hyper, before becoming hypo, so yes it can happen.

If you read the NHS page at nhs.uk/conditions/thyroiditis/ it describes symptoms such as those you mentioned.

I was first diagnosed as overactive, then a few months later it went to underactive, then it went stable. But now I sort of no it's gone overactive again, really thirsty, can't stand the heat etc. At first they just thought it was postpartum thyroiditis. So I'm guessing time will see

Maybe your palps are due to not taking your dose of thyroid hormones. That's why we have to take a daily dose because our body cannot function without thyroid hormones. If you are taking levothyroxine, It has been found that you can take a once-a-week dose. The heart and brain need the most T3 which should be converted from levothyroxine into T3. It might suit you better than a daily dose.

The doc put you on beta blockers without doing a full thyroid test? These GP’s are crazy!

Everyone’s Hashimotos is different but yes you can have fluctuations some mildly some wildly. You’re only newly diagnosed so maybe you don’t understand the importance of your daily medication? (Sorry only guessing not meaning to sound patronising) Consistency is everything with this condition. Even when you feel well you need to carry on same time everyday, day in, day out for the rest of your life. If you feel Hyper or Hypo ALWAYS. Insist on an urgent blood test before changing your dosage.

Can you not get a blood test sooner than August? Have you stopped taking your Levo for now?

No, I'm still taking it. 50mcg. And beta-blockers 20mg twice a day. I only had a blood test done in may and it was stable so they are abit reluctant to repeat it so soon.
