I've got word today that I'm having pre op next wed for major surgery. My question is with my thyroid kicking up at the moment will it be safe for them to go ahead with the operation or will they have to wait until my bloods are right. Thanks

Hashimotos flare and surgery
First Mauds, I'm sorry you are having an operation but I cannot answer your question and hopefully another member will be able to answer when they read your post.
I would think that the person who is going to operate will have a good idea of whether or not it will be possible as they deal with people who can have life-threatening conditions and who come through without any problems.
I hope you have a quick recovery.
Thanks shaws I'm having episodes of palps tiredness anxiety I'm just over major surgery in Feb but this will be even worse. My thyroid was fine until op in Feb I was in ICU in coma and between all the drugs pumped into me they never gave me my eltroxin for over a week i guess that set everything off. My poor body is taking a battering I'm just scared things will be worst if the can't get the thyroid right.
My goodness! What can one say when you've had an horrific experience never mind coping with hypo as well. How could they possibly not have given you eltroxin for a whole week. God knows, they know nothing at all about how important it is that we are given a 'life-giving' hormone daily especially if our body is undergoing other problems too.
It is inexplicable. No wonder you are anxious and I'd ask them to give you a Full Thyroid Test i.e. including FT4 and FT3 to make sure they are at an optimum level. That at least might help you rather than being at the bottom of the range. I am positive their training doesn't really inform them of how important thyroid hormones are. It seems to me they're very poorly trained indeed.
I wish you well and a speedy recovery.
I'm having surgery in a different hospital this time it's a huge hospital in Dublin I'll take everything up to them wed hopefully they'll be better than last place this surgery will be massive so I'm hoping they'll look after me better
What do you mean by 'kicking up'? Do you mean you're more hypo than usual? If so, that is not a Hashi's flare. A flare - aka Hashi's 'hyper' swing - is when your levels rise sharply, and you get hyper-like symptoms. If that's the case, it would probably be best to wait until they come down again. Pretty awful to be having another surgery so soon after the last one. A trauma like that is bound to upset your levels, make you more hypo. As shaws said, do make sure they test your thyroid thoroughly before doing anything.
Good luck!
Thanks greygoose I'll have blood results Monday I'm under active by the last bloods but I feel hyper I've never had palps when I'm under I've been increased to 125 for past 6 weeks but I'm 2 stone lighter after last surgery and I'm wondering if I'm hyper now guess I'll find out Monday.
Well, you can't actually become hyper. But you have Hashi's, so you could be having a Hashi's 'hyper' swing. But, palps can be a hypo symptom. Just because you've never had them before, doesn't mean they can't suddenly appear when you're hypo. But, yes, you will find out on Monday.
Everything will be just fine
Hoping everything goes well for you. As already said make sure they check your bloods first and I'm sure they will do the right things for you at the time. Let's us know how your recovery goes!
