Does anyone have stats to support the argument that there is a link between high fluoride intake, and low thyroid function?
I'm trying to get local councillor to stop the water company adding fluoride to our water. It's actually illegal to mass medicate a population. ukcaf.org/european_court_ru...
I know there are anti fluoride groups in various parts of the UK, but there appears to be none in the North - unless of course you know differently.

I think that since the ruling was in 2005 and that article was written in 2009, yet we still have fluoridation, it might indicate the latter's value as a reference. During my term as a non-Exec Directer of a Health Authority, we debated the subject and I remember how vociferously the Director of Public Health upheld the continuance of fluoridation in the region, and that's what happened.... I've not done much investigation into the subject of fluoridation and association with thyroid disorders since, but this study published in the BMJ found "There was no evidence of a relationship between fluoride exposure (from urine and tap water) and the diagnosis of a thyroid condition. There was no statistically significant association between fluoride exposure and abnormal (low or high) TSH levels relative to normal TSH levels. Rerunning the models with the sample constrained to the subset of participants for whom we could discern some source(s) of fluoride exposure from drinking water and/or dental products revealed no significant associations.
Conclusion These analyses suggest that, at the population level, fluoride exposure is not associated with impaired thyroid functioning in a time and place where multiple sources of fluoride exposure, including CWF, exist".
Hi. Many thanks for taking the time to reply. It seems that there are many articles that contradict each other on this topic, but I found that since moving to an area that adds fluoride to water, my health problems started. It will be interesting to see what happens here.
If you Google fluoride effect on thyroid you will get one heck of a lot of articles and info screaming that fluoride most definitely can cause hypothyroidism
I don't have any links to studies, and I'm not well enough today to do any research. But I originally come from Birmingham which I think was the first place to have flouride added to water. 3 females in my immediate family have hypothyroidism (non-autoimmune), mine started in the early 1970s, flouride was added in the 1960s and I lived in Birmingham from 1948 to 1985.
Here is a link to a Google search, I remember the Birmingham Evening Mail ran an article about this many years ago, and it looks like there are others. You may find some evidence within those articles.
I seem to remember years ago an article saying increase of thyroid issues when fluoride increased. But can't remember where-story of my life! I'd also had an on running dialogue with my dentist. He was horrified when I said I don't do fluoride and extra isn't in our water. I was getting a dig each time I went! Then I went to Thyroid Uk's conference a few years back near Birmingham and picked up some lierature re the dangers of fluoride in water-I also picked up info for my dentist! He didn't comment again so I can only surmise that he read them and thought I may have a point! Around the end of last year though he insisted I at least tried again to rinse my mouth with the stuff before bed and I said I would if any adverse effects I would stop. I didn't have any testing done in that period but I take my basal temperature and that dropped quite a bit so haven't taken anymore!
