The late Dr. Blanchard's protocol

I found this site in which the author detailed how Dr. Blanchard approached not just primary hypothyroidism, but conditions related to it such as chronic fatigue/fibromyalgia, IBS, ADD/ADHD, similar to the late Dr. Lowe. Interesting, though, was Dr. Blanchard's use of microdoses of T3 or NDT, spread out over the day, similar to what Ray Peat, PhD has advocated. The article explains why Dr. Blanchard's method is effective versus the 'more is better' approach. I'll likely give it a go but I agree with the general view that one size doesn't fit all. And, as always, if another way of taking thyroid medication is working, don't mess with it.

It conjures up great feelings for me each time I hear Dr Blanchard's name mentioned . Personally I regraded not seeing Dr Blanchard . By the time I wanted to see him even though he was about three hours drive from my home Dr Blanchard unfortunately passed away . Fortunately for many of us Dr Blanchard left behind a Great book in which he details his *Functional Approach* of dosing his patients with both T4 and T3/NDT . I'm not saying that this approach is for everyone . It's Not one size fits all .But I know that it works perfectly well for many . Myself included .

Always like to hear success stories! How long have you been using his protocol and how long did it take before you began to see positive results? I have a large canister of Thiroyd and, yesterday, I took a paring knife to chop up several tablets into tiny pieces, taking a piece every three hours until bedtime. I'm definitely warmer and my mood seems better. Losing weight will be a critical marker for me. Today I've been urinating quite frequently and my stomach has also sent me scurrying to the bathroom many times, lol. I don't feel hyper, though, so it might be unrelated to taking thyroid throughout the day. Perhaps I'll have a better sense of what is or isn't going on after a week.

I too am a great fan of Dr B and that website you referenced is amazing! Am in UK and unable to find slow release T3 and can't tolerate even small doses of Cytomel although have tried many times. Your suggestion of using NDT in tiny doses seems a good idea though so will try it. If you have any sources (in the world) for the SR T3 please PM me.

Thanks for putting up this great post

Hello jgelliss,

Do you still find this "protocol" or way of dosing that Kenneth Blanchard used a successful treatment for yourself? I have tried many different doses and combinations. I think I made myself "crash" and had the stuck TSH that Dr Blanchard talks about in his books. I have read both of his books and now for the last 9 months I have been trying to take a small dose of NDT (15mg NP THyroid) along with Levoxyl. I do not have the slow release in the NP, and have tried taking the 15 mg split up in 4 doses, 3 doses, currently 2 doses. Still not feeling "even". I am always intrigued to hear how other people who follow Dr Blanchards method do there thyroid dosing. Are you still using this way of dosing? If you don't mind what and how do you take it? I have always been so up and down daily... hourly.... with any T3 that I take. Even still. One hour I might feel fairly good, the next hour or two I may feel overmedicated, not in a hyper way but a strange fatigued way that overcomes my eyes and just makes me want to close them and sleep, then that may let up or I may feel jittery than back to good for a bit, then hypo and swollen. One day is never the same as the next. Just hoping for some input from people who successfully have found their optimal dose of T4 along with the little bit of T3 their bodies can use and feel good on.

I'm so sorry that your not feeling yourself . 15mg may not be enough for you . Do you have your latest labs with FT3 FT4 TSH ? That can be very telling .

I dose with 3/8grain split 3x/day that is 1/8 grain and I split my T4 2x/day too . You might need a bit more of T4 . You would also want to see if your on enough nutrients that help our thyroids meds work better for us . Please read excellent posts by SeasideSusie and Slowdragon . Guts/liver/gallbladder are very involved with converting our thyroid meds T4 to T3. Also going gluten dairy soy sugar coffee free is very helpful too.

Best Wishes.
