Gall Bladder Removal

Hi all. I have Hashi' s and PA. A recent Gastroscopy revealed stomach erosion and inflammation. I had my gallbladder removed several years ago and wondered if that had any effect on the acid balance in the stomach.

Any information please.

Cannot answer that question ,but a gastroscopy in November revealed gastritis,Barratts mucosa, and ulcers. The biopsies revealed nothing .I had a CT scan which was clear.I had been feeling pressure in my chest. Had tried low acid remedies to no avail. Was on ppi but after 6 weeks no change in ulcers shown by second gastroscopy. There can be several causes of ulcers .Biopsies sent for extra study and an aggressive Lymphoma found. Having PET scan this week to see extent before starting chemo.

So if no improvement demand more investigation.

Some people swear by cabbage juicing for treating ulcers. I haven't been brave enough to test it out yet but Google it.

Thank you, I will look into that.

I am aware of the issues with ppi's but that is the least of my problems now faced with the cause of the ulcers being an aggressive cancer and the severe side effects of the chemo treatment .

My friend just had that and it didn't work, so I hope it works better for you.

Not comforting ,but thank you. I think it is around 70% successful but so far every bit of new info has been worse. The irony is that I feel fairly fit at present.Just hope my biopsies were not mixed up.

Suppose the PET scan will reveal all.

Thank you for your reply, I wish you the very best. I am new to this site and have not got the lingo yet. I don't know what a POP is. Good luck.

That should read PPI.

Thank you for your best wishes. A ppi is a proton pump inhibitor which reduces stomach acid but has some nasty longer term effects.

Thank you for your explanation.

Low stomach acid is common when not correctly treated for Hashimoto's

Do you have any recent blood test results and ranges you can add?

You are legally entitled to printed copies of your blood test results and ranges.

UK GP practices are supposed to offer online access for blood test results. Ring and ask if this is available and apply to do so if possible, if it is you may need "enhanced access" to see blood results.

In reality many GP surgeries do not have blood test results online yet

Alternatively ring receptionist and request printed copies of results. Allow couple of days and then go and pick up.

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also extremely important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if Thyroid antibodies are raised

Obviously with PA as well as Hashimoto's you may have low folate, vitamin D and/or ferritin

All thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. Do not take Levothyroxine dose in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take immediately after blood draw. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random

Getting thyroid levels correct and all four vitamin levels optimal can make significant difference

Many people also find strictly gluten free diet helps too

Hashimoto's affects the gut and leads to low stomach acid and then low vitamin levels . Low vitamin levels affect Thyroid hormone working

Poor gut function can lead leaky gut (literally holes in gut wall) this can cause food intolerances. Most common by far is gluten.

According to Izabella Wentz the Thyroid Pharmacist approx 5% with Hashimoto's are coeliac, but over 80% find gluten free diet helps, sometimes significantly. Either due to direct gluten intolerance (no test available) or due to leaky gut and gluten causing molecular mimicry (see Amy Myers link)

Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms, help gut heal and slowly lower TPO antibodies

Ideally ask GP for coeliac blood test first, plus vitamin D, folate and ferritin testing

But don't be surprised that GP or endo never mention gut, gluten or low vitamins. Hashimoto's gut connection is very poorly understood

Come back with new post once you get results and ranges and members can advise on next steps

Thank you, that is very helpful. I am seeing my GP tomorrow. For biopsy results. I will ask for the tests you mentioned . Thank you.

Both my sisters and I have had their gallbladders removed mine was calcium stones.

None of us have Hashi's or gut problems of any kind, so sorry cannot give you any help. I don't think that having your gallbladder removed makes mush difference only if you already have gut issues, maybe.
