Gall stone

Just had liver / gall bladder scan and have gall stones. Could this be related to Hashimoto’s, high cholesterol etc?

I’m seeing GP Fri and don’t need another healthy eating lecture! I’ve been gluten free (almost completely) for 3/52, have eaten less & less dairy over last 3 years as felt it increased pain & bloating and my diet isn’t awful.

I think gall stones have more to do with being hypo than with your diet. I imagine an awful lot of us on here have had their gallbladder removed - me included, and I've never, ever had high cholesterol.

I agree with Greygoose! I would only say be very careful if you do have stones/large stones as it can be really painful, You could look at the American website Gallbladder Attack with lots of information. x

Thank you.

It’s a dull constant ache all the time with acute pain after eating some meals. From the Sonographer’s expression when I asked if she thought they could be treated with shockwave I think they are quite big. Seeing gp tomorrow, so should know more then.

Will take a look at the website

I got into a very serious state! Do be careful and take good advice. My thyroid overactive - nobody listening to me about pain in abdomen and upper right back/shoulder. Finally an A&E lady doctor said I think gb - nothing to do with thyroid! Arranged a private scan and large stone and others. Had to wait until thyroid in range before surgery. Drastic weight loss meantime! Only some stones are suitable for treatment I understand. Surgery the normal go to, especially if dietary changes have not helped. The pain is awful and the worry of knowing you are going to be in pain if you do eat.

All best best. X

It’s been a frustrating few years and glad at least I’m getting answers regarding upper abdo pain. It’s almost a relief they’ve found a cause. I’m resigned that’ll I’ll probably need surgery, hoping it will improve at least that aspect of my health. X

I do believe it caused my gallbladder to be removed!

After many, many years of pain, I (touch wood) haven’t had any gall bladder problems since my hypothyroidism was finally diagnosed and treated.

I had my gall bladder removed in June as a day case. I had 60 + stones. The op was no problem and recovered well. I just have 3 small scars as a reminder and the horrendous pain is now gone after 7 years of agony.

I saw GP yesterday and being referred for consideration of removal.

Absolutely, 100% related. You’d be surprised have many hypos have no gallbladder. Removing mine was one of the worst decisions I have ever made. My digestion has never recovered and I developed a post-op hernia near bellybutton. If I could relive the situation I would refuse the op and try to approach it differently. Giving a warning to you just in case. I wish someone warned me.

Unfortunately having been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s but currently ‘normal’ thyroid levels there is not really a medication route I can follow...thus removal!

I’ve heard of laser therapy being successful. I am not sure if it’s an option for you just less invasive and less complications.

I’ll ask, as know the consultant I’m likely to be seeing. Guess it depends how big the stones are.

Had my gall bladder removed many years before Hashimotos diagnosis. No stones - just a rancid mess apparently ! In my creative imagination at the time - I thought it may have been caused by the Crohns inflammation funneling upwards ... blamed everything on that for over 30 years !
