If anyone has colitis, would you be so kind as to share your treatments to help the condition ?
My nephew has just been diagnosed, has now come off steriods & on a new med that does not suit him at all. The meds don't help & he's getting awful headaches and suffering another bout of rectal bleeding so needs to get back Drs.
He can't tolerate fibre at the moment and is finding out what foods suit etc.
I've advised Kefir for the probiotics & glutamine but as I say any colitis sufferers out there who have had success treating without the need of a GP would be most appreciated.

I've taken glutamine powder. I was taking roughly a teaspoon in water every day for many months. Body builders use glutamine too, although I can never remember why, and they take it in much, much higher doses than I ever did. It did help me a lot and I have absolutely no regrets about taking it.
Eventually, however, I seemed to reach the point where my gut suddenly got a lot worse. I stopped taking the glutamine powder and the severe pain vanished very quickly.
Glutamine is sensitive to heat and can be destroyed by heat. Take glutamine powder in room temperature water or tap water, and take it well away from hot drinks and hot food.
Glutamine is sold in capsules as well as a powder. The capsules are too low a dose to do any good, and the powder allows for more control of dose. Also, loose powder is much more economical than capsules.
It might be worth posting on the Crohn's and Colitis Support forum, although I'm never sure whether some of these other forums are into "self help" like we are here.

I do believe being gluten and dairy free is very helpful and an anti-inflammatory diet too.
Testing VitD would be useful - also B12 - Folate & Ferritin. He is possibly suffering with absorption issues which will be affecting his overall health ...
Am afraid it's self-help and patience when it comes to our guts π

I'll remind my nephew about importance of Vit D and B12 plus anything else he may be deficient in. He needs to get any results from GP that may show deficiencies.
He is most definitely suffering with absorption issues so needs to heal his gut particularly as his procedure could see inflammation.
I agree drugs are not always the answer and we must look out for ourselves.
If he has ulcerative colitis he should be treated by a gastroenterologist
I have been on Asacol for the last 20 years and it's kept me in remission but obviously doesn't suit everyone.
Best to keep off fibre and anything that may cause a flare, actually a so called "healthy diet" is not always the best for UC sufferers, white bread, limited veg, fruit and avoid anything spicy.
Hi Bantam. Thinking about it I think my sister told me it was UC and I think he's due another Gastro appt. He did find he couldn't cope with brown bread and was better with white, I'll remind him about keeping a diary, that's a good idea.
I suffer from colitis but I control mine by diet. Find grains cause me problems especially wheat and corn cause problems. You really need to keep a diary of what you eat to see which foods cause a flair up. Some people find going gluten free helps. Hope this helps
Thanks elwins, your post is helpful. I've recommended to my nephew going gluten free as I find it helpful being Hashi's, I think it's dawning on him he's going to need to sort his diet out. I agree, the diary is a good idea. Thank you.

I don't have colitis, just IBS, but I take about 2.5g a day. Bulkpowders.co.uk is a decent supplier. Bodybuilders take it because it is depleted by strenuous exercise and is abundant is muscle tissue, so supplementing it means you can do harder workouts and recover better.

Now the fact our MRI showed no damage to your gut was fascinating to read. Glutamine is great, I benefit from it myself and your MRI story seems like solid proof it's does us all good. Nice one ππ»
I'm armed with info for my nephew and in time he'll be able to take it all in, it's a shock to him that he has a chronic illness & he's still getting his head around it all.
