NDT private prescription what do you pay is anyone getting it on NHS

Hi all, I have no thyroid destroyed with RAI because of Graves. I am intolerant to thyroxine and currently on T3. I am pretty well on it but do feel an underlying something still missing. I was reading up more on NDT in the past I dismissed it as everything I previously read suggested that T1 and T2 didn’t do anything. I have recently read that T2 helps with body weight and T1 helps with brain fog so I am really thinking about it. My Endo will do me a private prescription. From what I have read a person with no thyroid will need 3 grains. ( I think that’s right)

I am just wondering those of you that have NDT on a private prescription.

How much are you taking

what is the cost.

Does anyone get it on NHS

Thank you xx

Hi Rubyred, I take NDT but I source and buy my own from America, as far as I'm aware NHS don't prescribe it?

It's very doubtful if there is any T2 and T1 in NDT. The thyroid itself only produces miniscule amounts of it. The rest is produced by conversion of T3 and rT3 into T2 and T2 into T1. Given the tiny amount of thyroid hormone in one grain, how much of it is likely to be T2 and T1 - would it even survive the pill-making process? So, if that's your only reason for wanting NDT, you might be disappointed. :)

Hiya thank you for reply. yes the only reason I was keen to try was for the T2 and T1. I thought it was maybe good to give my body what it had pre RAI.

Well, it would be. If you could? There's just no guarantee that NDT will do that, though. But, given that T2 and T1 mainly come from conversion, if you're taking T4 and T3, you should be ok for the other two. :)

I am currently just T3. Do you mean the T4 & T3 in NDT will convert to T1 & T2

Yes. T4 converts to T3 and rT3. T3 and rT3 convert to T2. T2 converts to T1. :)

Doctors can prescribe NDT if they're willing to take personal responsibility because it is unlicensed in the UK. Not many are willing to do that. Armour is the most expensive, not sure about the cost of other prescription NDT.

Many members source the non-prescription Thai NDT and have found it just as good, although much cheaper, it is apparently made from the same thyroid powder USP as Armour, etc.
