Update; Kefir Diary... Miraculous, dentist cannot believe it! Expecting to do an extraction today, he is amazed at the healed tooth & gum!

This is for everybody suffering with dental issues!

This is the third instance of amazing healing as a direct result of taking Probiotic Kefir.

My poor mother developed a very difficult situation with an upper tooth. Several attempts at fitting a denture caused a lot of problems with this tooth. The gum became very inflamed and eventually a nasty abcess developed. She was given a very nasty, very strong antibiotic with even worse than the usual side effects.

Having finished the lengthy course of antibiotics, she still was experiencing no relief, which prompted the dentist to give her another course.

In the meantime, I had been unable to make our water based Probiotic Kefir for about 4 weeks... And in the meantime my mother developed the situation.

After having had such a bad time with the first course if antibiotics, I suggested to my mother that she held off, as I had just started brewing my kefir again.

She heeded my advice and took the kefir instead.

In just over a week her tooth has cleared completely. She went to the dentist for a follow up appointment today. He was expecting to pull the tooth but was amazed at the healed tooth and gum! Nothing short of a miracle!!

That's now two teeth healed for my Ma, 2 abcesses...and one extremely recalcitrant abcessed tooth with me!

Everybody should take Probiotics for general health!

It's the Final Frontier to quote Star Trek!!!

Keep on Kefiring!

Well done !!!!! I have taken a pre/probiotic since diagnosed 18 months ago with Hashi's and I swear by them for much improved gut health, reduced virus's, infections and general feel good factor. I recently had to have a tooth extracted as it broke in the gum and my dentist couldn't believe how quickly my gum healed. I wish to make a comparison with magical horse manure and garden growth but perhaps that's a story too far. I feel that probiotics are a much underrated healing power.

Totally!!!

Our Dentist is in a state of total amazement, and wants us all to continue!

It's the way of the future!

Horse manure really does have a similar effect on veg growing and gardens, protecting and enriching the soil at the same time. Your dentists awareness is fantastic! This is how good regimes can transmit to others ...... By seeing the benefits at a basic but tangible level.

Poppy_the_cat profile image
Poppy_the_cat in reply toBaobabs

I totally agree.

There seems to be a growing awareness of Probiotics.

Equally important too, the Prebiotics that are indeed the manure that feeds and sustains the probiotic darlings!

I am very lucky to have such a lovely dentist looking after my dear mother, I am most grateful to him.

We are using kefir in our house and i take two teaspoons in a glass of water with some lemon juice. I am taking it only about twice a week, but i find it does do some good. I don't have any hard evidence as such, but i generally feel good taking it.

I take mine last thing at bedtime.

RedApple profile image
RedAppleAdministrator

That's amazing!

I feel the need to add a warning though, because not everyone benefits from kefir. Some people actually develop unpleasant gut/bowel symptoms when they take it. I am guessing that this is because we all have our own unique gut biota and introducing the wrong ones will make you ill, not make you better. So, just like thyroid tests and meds, kefir is not a 'one size fits all' solution.

Poppy_the_cat profile image
Poppy_the_cat in reply toRedApple

Well, as one introduces I believe, 'long lost' probiotic wee beasties, our damaged gut environment that has become so challenged, has to re-adjust itself. Either very loose stools or constipation are to be expected initially, but well worth persisting as the benefits far outweigh the inconvenience I believe.

Poppy 😊

RedApple profile image
RedAppleAdministrator in reply toPoppy_the_cat

It was a lot worse than temporary constipation/loose stools. I recall ongoing strong stomach cramps and excessive bloating that didn't resolve over time being reported. I wonder whether water kefir might have different effects on a person than dairy kefir though.

Poppy_the_cat profile image
Poppy_the_cat in reply toRedApple

Ahhh ha... You are right there I think!

Water based is very gentle.

Maybe you should give it a try?

I can't do dairy... I tried everything, organic, unpasteurised, cow, goats and even ewe's milk, but no go.

If you need help, just ask 😉

This article lists a variety of conditions that might mean a person reacts badly to kefir, including histamine intolerance (which I have), SIBO and yeast overgrowth which is also common in hypothyroid people. fixyourgut.com/fyg-issues-w...

Poppy_the_cat profile image
Poppy_the_cat in reply toRedApple

I have MCA...Mast Cell Activation syndrome, which provokes a massive histamine release.... I can't tolerate Anti histamine! I also have to battle to keep Candida at bay... I have a total of 17 food intolerances that provoke a serious autoimmune response...yet it's only thanks to my water based kefir that I am functioning and being able to eat as well as I am.

I only wish it could benefit you too...

I shall read the article.

I know how you feel.

We are like an ongoing self experiment!

After years of trying to direct my Doctors in the right direction, I have at long last got an appointment to go to the John Radcliffe for an in depth Autoimmune testing consultation in July.

Fingers crossed.

I think my Hashimotos is actually secondary and I believe my compromised gut is the root cause of all the other autoimmune responses I have going on!

Maybe you could also contact the author (John Brisson) of the article I posted. He might be interested to hear about your positive experience with water kefir despite MCAS, candida etc.

How do you know which strains of Probiotic bacteria are in your version of water kefir?

Poppy_the_cat profile image
Poppy_the_cat in reply toRedApple

I don't. All I do know is that they are all 'good' as I had them 'health' tested in a lab by a friend.

Poppy_the_cat profile image
Poppy_the_cat in reply toRedApple

I have read the article thank-you.

Extremely interesting..

Very in depth indeed.

Heavens it's not for nothing that we have the expression 'to go with your gut feeling!'

I was so desperate, as I was getting nowhere with my GP or the Consultant, I read up on it and had an instinct it was the right thing to do...and thankfully, it seems to work for me.

Every time you think you reach a certain level of understanding, you find it drops again to a deeper level of complexity!

We only ever seem to scratch the surface of things!

I shall read the article again to dissect it further.

It does seem to say that folk who cannot tolerate the properties of the dairy kefir, can sometimes tolerate the water based version.

The problem with me is that my so called 'dairy intolerance' is very peculiar.....

When I go abroad to Spain, Italy or France I have no problem whatsoever with their semi skilled cow milk! However, here in the UK any dairy milk product, even unpasteurised cow, goats or ewe's milk gives me a seriously bad reaction, equal to a severe gluten attack; the effects of which last me for up to 6 weeks.

I also can't eat British butter.

BUT...

I can eat French butter no problem!

We are such highly calibrated creatures, that so many infinitesimally small occurrences adversely affecting us individually, further complicated by our individual genetics has such a cumulative effect with so many possible permutations... unraveling it all, is bound to be a herculean task.

I suppose we just have to inform ourselves as much as we can and keep faith in ourselves not to give in and not to give up!

Thank-you for indicating the article to me.

Look into A2 vs A1 cows. Most of EU is A2 (the less allergic dairy protein). Thats probably your sensitivity. British A2 herds maybe ok for you. Check around with small family farms selling their milk at farmers markets re being A2 herds.

I wish you the best of luck with that. The thyroid journey is a tough one. I’m amazed with all that ties into our thyroid disfunction. Its kinda like which came first the chicken or the egg. Did our gut problems come first and then hypo/hashis or the other way around? I have many similar problems to your. I too am milk intolerant, so I have stopped kefir. Now you mention a water based one. I’m like whoo hoo. Could you please tell me more about your kefir? I’m so glad you have been getting positive results with it. Have you looked into reduced stomach acids? I’ve start supplementing with Food safe Betaine HCL. I went to my doc for guidance, but she had nothing for me, so I’ve been hittin the net to find out more. Over all I feel better. Still not 100%, but much better from when I started. Best of luck

Hi RedApple

That’s interesting as I’ve just started taking probiotics Acidophilus 10 billion a day in capsule form it was to help my gut issues with Hashis and since being on NDT my stomach doesn’t feel right !

I haven’t noticed any benefit perhaps it’s time I took a Kefir each day to try and heal my gut ? I really don’t know what the answer is

Hi Kazbe,

It takes about 2 years for capsule form probiotics to reach the shelves (found interesting video on internet explaining why tablets don't always work).. So by then the overwhelming amount of content will be long since dead!

Freshly made yourself controlling the ingredients, organic fruit where ever possible is by far the best!

Ha ha ha... "Mercy, Mercy!"

I certainly am.

It's saved me.

Last October I finally plumbed the depths. I had reached the point that I was even reacting to simply drinking a glass of water, my autoimmune response was equal to a gluten attack! I virtually could not eat ANYTHING!!! The Kefir saved me.

Because I could not make my kefir for over 4 weeks, my virtually healed tooth took a turn for the worse. I discovered a 'bulb' the size of small petit pois, on the bone of my jaw .. Had I gone back to the dentist I would have been given an antibiotic pronto... But seeing as it's not painful, I am super charging myself with the kefir and it three weeks it's shrunk by over 50%... So I'm just brewing the magic elixir! It tastes so good my partner wants to put champagne in it with an Umbrella!!! 🍹🍸

I too have found water Kefir to have an almost miraculous healing effect (not just with me, but on others that I have offered it to).

It also tastes wonderful (I add pure apple juice to the second fermentation), and I wish that I could drink more of it. I am yet to find a definitive answer on how much we can drink a day.

It should be remembered that it is just one strain of pro-biotic, and still needs to be kept in balance with other strains. So I make and eat my own Sauerkraut , and take a capsule containing other pro-biotics.

Prior to adding the other pro-biotics, I found that the Kefir had too strong an affect as regards being a diuretic, and I was getting constipated even though I drank plenty of water. The problem went away when I added the other pro-biotics.

Well I got the milk kefir grains and started growing the babies! at the end of said time I drunk a bit! it was disgusting!!! I could not tell if it was off! and it looked horrible. Was it me? I am useless in the kitchen. I do believe in the healing power of kefir and had it on my mind to try the water base one for ages. I think I will go for the water based one Poppy-the-cat :0) I also have my crock pot thing to start doing home made sauerkraut, had it since Christmas and there it sits. I have been very rough at present with under medicated thyroid for years, B12 pooling and not getting into cells, very low morning cortisol, the bloating gut from hell, and zero energy, so as soon as I am able I will start. Where did you get your water kefir grains from darling?

tzracer profile image
tzracer in reply toKatherine123

I've been making it for a few years now and it's a very different taste at first, it is sour. Watched a TV presenter do the same thing and drink it straight.

Once you have separated from grains pop it in the fridge overnight and it's a bit more palatable cold. Add a little runny honey or some cordial. Or I just put it in my morning smoothie with fruit.

Stick with it, it's helped me when I stopped taking the fibogel and macrogol for IBS.

I've been making it recently with unpasteurised milk, it seems even creamier.

Hope you are feeling better soon

It doesn't really go off, it just tastes and smells like sweaty trainers - if it grows coloured mould, then something nasty has got into it and it's no good. The trouble is that the taste is sharp and modern palates have got used to bland, sweet tastes, Sharp and bitter is good for us. You can mix it with pureed berries to disguise the taste.

Hi I have been taking Goat Kefir for about a year. I have Hashimoto diagnosed in 1998. After the initial trial and error I ended up taking 100mg thyroxine. For ages there has been no change in this, however since taking Kefir my meds have been reduced to 75mg and I haven't had any colds. Fingers crossed that this continues. I have another blood test next week to see if it needs reducing more!! Amazing.

I drink kefir every day and it had no effect on my dental abscess. I had 9 oral antibiotics and 6 IV antibiotics because no one could be bothered to treat it. The only thing that works for a dental abscess is to cut the gum and apply suction to the gum to get rid of the pus, and then having the offending teeth extracted. My dentist of 34 years told me to squeeze it, I'm not kidding, new dentist just offered antibiotics. My face swelled from my jaw to under my eye. I was sent to A&E 3 times, 3 hospitals in total. This went on for 5 months, I drove nearly 1,000 miles to try and get treatment. All antibiotics do us stop the infection from getting to your brain. A few weeks after the abscess was cut I felt ill again, profuse sweating, rapid heartbeat, pus filled pimples through my scalp and on my face. My GP called an ambulance because she thought it was sepsis. I had blood cultures done, more IV antibiotics too, and the emergency doctor wanted to admit me. I decided to come back in 2 days and I had an echocardiogram, as a dental infection can damage your heart. The results were clear thank goodness. This all happened last year and it's left me very traumatised of anything medical.

I've just had surgery 3 weeks ago for an anal fissure and my surgeon found a fistula, all I kept thinking is what if I have an infection after surgery, would antibiotics now even work?

Poppy_the_cat profile image
Poppy_the_cat in reply to

I am shocked and horrified to read your story.

Appalled at how you have been transgressed... and equally shocked to read of pus being cut out and squeezed from you! My grandfather who was a very eminent surgeon known internationally, was always very wary of squeezing pus anywhere!!

Clearly your system is in a very debilitated state. From what I understand you need 'buildin up, from the foundations'. Probiotics and Prebiotics is some shape or form would seem to be a must for you. I would advise finding yourself a seriously qualified Nutritionist of possible.

I can definitely categorically that the probiotics both my mother and I take have contributed to healing our teeth. Of that we have no doubt. The only observation I can offer is that your system must be so overloaded you are in need of greater, stronger intervention, something that a nutritionist would be able to help you with, as I believe you are in great need of help.

Good luck and take care,

Poppy the 🐈

in reply toPoppy_the_cat

I eat a very good diet Poppy, I don't eat any processed food. I have recently lost 3 stones by cutting out carbs, I eat gluten free. I have been ill for a long time with interstitial cystitis, and I get very little sleep because of it.

The suction was applied to the pus, so none of it was left in the abscess. I had 1 1/2 inches cut at the top of my gum in order for the pus to be removed. But that is only part of the treatment. The oral surgeon who performed this, said I had to have the teeth extracted, no root canal, the infection really had gotten a good hold. I had been telling my dentist about pain from a capped tooth for many years, and nothing was done about it. When the cap was removed by my new dentist to extract the tooth, the tooth had decay, if this had been dealt with by my former dentist I wouldn't have lost the second tooth. The pain was severe, even morphine didn't shift it. It was incredibly miserable suffering this for many months. All the talk about reducing antibiotics was a nonsense in my case, I only had them because no one would take ownership of the problem. The doctor with the sepsis scare was so angry at the way I had been neglected. A dental abscess can be a very dangerous thing, he asked if the person advising me to squeeze it was still in a job. I live in a very remote rural area, A&E is 55 miles each way for me, I even drove 140 miles to a dental hospital, what a waste of time that was, the student didn't acknowledge the infection but just wanted to try a therapeutic filling in the second tooth, I never went back but complained in writing. I have read time and again that antibiotics don't actually reach an abscess so what was the point of having so many? It's not nice to have a cannula to have IV antibiotics. When I finally had the procedure the local anaesthetic didn't work and it felt like I was being stabbed, just awful, but I told the oral surgeon to carry on just to deal with it.

I have since had antibiotics for pus coming from my anus. I had 6 years of an anal fissure, I had to plead for a referral to a colorectal surgeon. I was given antibiotics but they didn't clear the pus, I was left from last August until the end of May bleeding every day, and having a discharge of pus all this time. Again antibiotics can't reach an abscess, it has to be cut and drained. My surgeon found a fistula which he has had to cut open to drain it. He took skin from my retum to form a patch over my fissure and fistula, by then I had grown a huge tag, that was removed too. All this could have been avoided with prompt treatment, I just despair with what the NHS has become.

Glad it's worked for you. Sadly, after 16 years of kefir, I still have rubbish gums. But I haven't taken antibiotics during that time.

Poppy_the_cat profile image
Poppy_the_cat in reply toAngel_of_the_North

Clearly we are all in a different place. Again I see the whole problem as a highly complex puzzle...kefir it Probiotics are only one facet, one piece. Taken alone in isolation maybe they will not have to the sale strength, maybe depending on our level of compromised immune system they will not be the magic bullet, but they are most definitely a part of the equation.

The trick is finding the other missing pieces to this puzzle, sadly a lot is trial and error as so little is really understand by our Doctors...

What is for sure is that Diet is everything.

Diet to support the immune system is the way.
