I went to the dentist yesterday with a nasty infection after my tooth broke down and he said the best choice was to remove the roots so we did. Now I’m not sure if it looks like it’s healing normally and I keep getting horrible tastes in my mouth and bad breath and if the pain continues for 48 hours I need to go back for antibiotics in order to clear the infection But I’m just worried as it’s my first extraction...
Tooth root extraction : I went to the dentist... - Thyroid UK
Tooth root extraction
I would ring your dentist and make an appointment as soon as possible, he is in the best position to advise.
In the meantime, mix 1/4 tsp salt in 1/2 cup water and swish every hour. Or if you can tolerate dilute some Hydrogen Peroxide, that will kill infection.
Do you have a thyroid problem ?
Look up "dry socket" and try to do everything you can to avoid that or be sure to call your dentist to make sure that is not happening to you. Be very careful about not rinsing or doing anything to disturb the plug that forms in the socket. When this comes out prematurely due to swishing with salt water (avoid doing this too early) the pain you will experience from a dry socket will be like no other pain. Go carefully and look up what I'm talking about. Best wishes for fast healing.
Go back to the dentist
Please go to the dentist and get some antibiotics. I am not keen on them but this is what happened to me, last week I had a wisdom tooth removed which was a bit tricky but not impacted. I carried out all they said about not eating on that side (very difficult) not rinsing the first day and then subsequent days rinsed my mouth four times a day with hot salt water. This was wednesday of last week, but by Monday I felt worse and instead of the pain subsided it didnt, so by yesterday again woke up with raging headache, jaw ache, earache and pains in my upper jaws on the opposite side just like sinus. Went to the dentist and she said I have infected dry socket and put me on these vile Metronazodile (something like that). I am furious, mainly with the NHS and this business of cutting out antibiotics altogether. I was diagnosed with a prolapsed mitral valve about 30 years ago and told always to take antibiotics if I had a tooth extraction or anything pustular in the throat as if the bacteria flows back through the heart I would be in trouble. That was in Australia, now here the good old NHS wont even do that, so if I snuff it at my age with endocarditis we will know who to blame. I had this extraction done at a local dental hospital with all my details. If I had been put on antibiotics as soon as I had the extraction this could have been avoided.
EXACTLY the same thing happened to me! PLUS, when the tooth was extracted the dentist said it was "gushing infection ". I queried antibiotics as I am a nurse and was astonished that he said it is not in the guidelines now after an extraction. I was incredulous as he SAW the infection!!!A few days later my face was swollen, I was in agony and after rushing back he gave me the metrozole.
I was furious as well. Very dangerous!
My dentist seen I had an infection before hand cleaned out my tooth and told me to wait 48 hours to see if my body would get rid of the infection when I’m still sort of in pain I have ear ache soreness in the area my root was extracted it’s like a throbbing pain when it starts along with my cheek being so swollen and my breath was fine until yesterday day which has me stressed even more as I’ve never had my tooth pulled out....
Sorry you went through the same thing, yes with a prolapsed mitral valve, very dangerous, it could have been endo-elaine-itis instead of endocarditis!! The next time this happens with a tooth extraction I shall insist an also I wont be wanting to take those metronazodile again, the most vile of pills and thankfully I took the last one on thursday morning. A friend of mine on the osteoporosis group only took two and ended up in a and e with suspected stroke. I mentioned to a friend of mine I know very well and she said after a few she collapsed. FOrtunately I only suffered half of the side effects and they were bad enough
Common metronidazole side effects may include:
nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain;
diarrhea, constipation;
headache;
unpleasant metallic taste;
rash, itching;
vaginal itching or discharge;
mouth sores; or.
swollen, red, or "hairy" tongue.
If you waited the 2 days like I did, I'd go back now. It's Friday, and it will only get worse. I understand exactly how you are feeling. Sounds like a dry socket like mine. X
its normal i think as the steal blood causes smell you be rinsing out your mouth with salt water 4 times a day
Somebody told me to suck on a probiotic tablet to help create good bacteria in the mouth after an extraction, I found this helpful in my own healing experience.
Tooth infection in the US require antibiotics just before and for 5-7 day after an extraction or a root canal.
I had the same root canal done wrong 2xs over the last 3 years. Went to 3 different dentists. I finally told the new dentist I want it out and had it extracted 3 weeks ago. This is after the 2nd root canal on the same tooth that stayed infected. So I completely understand your pain and fear. If I listened to the dentist I would still have the infected tooth in my mouth. The good news is you got it out. Infections in your mouth can spread. Some disagree, but how could they not!
Infections from your teeth need to be taken care of immediately. If the dentist who removed the tooth won’t help you go to one that will. I went to 3 dentists for one tooth. It’s all about you getting the best care and feeling better.
I was not only given antibiotics to start the day before the extraction and to continue for 7 days after, my dentist also provided me with an RX mouth rinse. I had a follow-up the following week and my dentist even called me later that evening to make sure I was okay after the extraction and his office called the day after.
Yes, you will have soreness but not sure about how you’re healing with the bad taste. 48 hours of pain and wait with an infection doesn’t seem right.
I only had to take Tylenol for the pain. My dentist said my tooth was fractured and one of the hardest he’s had to take out. Of course it stays sensitive for a while, but antibiotics I have been told are necessary . Dry sockets are also common and very painful which could be what you’re experiencing. However, the infection needs to be treated too!
Good dentists are hard to find. If you don’t feel right it is probably wrong. I researched because I knew it was wrong but let it stay for years.... don’t do what I did. Don’t wait....i wish now I didn’t because no one really knows how a tooth infection can affect other parts of your body . All I know is that if you need to have any surgery your teeth need to be free of any infections for a reason.
Take care if you!
Feel better and good luck!!!
Sounds like you may need an antibiotic.. definitely get it checked.
