Conscious sedation at dentist tomorrow .......

and I'm dreading it! Been in agony for 10 days with tooth infection - the dreaded antibiotics haven't helped. Tooth is upper molar and roots are very near to my sinuses, hence the difficult extraction the top dentist is performing at his surgery. £300 price tag as he only sees private patients - I'm having to use the little money I'd saved to see Dr P :(

Absolutely terrified - conscious sedation sounds to me like I'll be wide awake - ahhhhhhh. Anyhow, on a happier note, the snow looks pretty lol.

It's fine..... but you might start telling jokes and laughing.... I had an abcess removed from the roots of three teeth, by cutting the gum and going in sideways..... and the two hours in the chair was over in a flash.....

You are awake, but you really don't care.... takes a while to wear off... I don't remember a trip from Nottingham to home, but my husband said I was quite happy and entertaining :) !!!

Really, don't worry about it. You'll know nothing & the time flies - it's brilliant! I am totally dentist phobic & have conscious sedation for all dental work.

Just look forward to the relief tomorrow :)

Thanks pp, it's always the anxiety that causes my dental phobia - I know as soon as that needle goes in! I'll be away with the fairies, but it's just that word worrying me "conscious"! Xx

I had tooth removed about 4 years ago due to abscess. All the right hand side of my face was swollen as though I had been punched over and over. My eye was closed shut with the swelling and the pain was indescribably. Nothing the dentist did came anywhere near the pain i was in and got so much relief afterwards though the swellings took a while to go down. Believe me, it will be a relief to sit in that chair - really it will!

Thanks Mandy, today's the day and as you say, it will be a relief to get shot of the horrid taste and pain xx

As others have said, it really isn't as bad as it sounds. I have had this on a number of occasions, and can remember nothing from a couple of minutes after being given the injection in my arm until some time afterwards. I didn't have the sickness you tend to get with a general anaesthetic, and yes, you may well end up talking all sorts of crap, or asking something, then nodding off, then waking up and asking it again. And, when they say do nothing for 24 hours later, they really mean it - I gave my partner at the time some cash after one treatment, and didn't recall it the next day when I had an empty wallet!!

All done, and as you said, can't remember a thing. Just got numb face and throbbing pain now which I can deal with. Many thanks, Laura x

Last year I had a wisdom tooth removed at Guys under intravenous sedation, it was brilliant, didn't feel a thing and was unaware of the extraction itself, felt the small prick of the needle in my hand, next the Dentist was saying "come along Mrs... I will escort you to the recovery area". Best experience at a Dentists I have ever had. Got a dry socket afterwards which is another story, do not drink through a straw as this can unlodge clots which need to be formed for fast healing, that was my only mistake.

Good luck.

Same here joyia - recall nothing after the injection. Thanks for advice, won't drink through a straw xx

I am in a similar boat at the moment having to undergo "cosmetic treatment" that is necessary and unavoidable but the NHS won't do it! I am unable to wear a denture and since I lost a front tooth when I was14yrs old was quite traumatized being a teenager with no front tooth! I saved up my pennies and had a three tooth bridge made when I was 16. I have had three bridges since then, they last a long time and I have paid for them all privately through the insurance I kept up and the fact that I was earning. Now, I have a big problem, bridge post holding teeth have dissolved and bridge fell out and I need implants! Insurance won't cover and I am now on benefits and unable to pay the £8000 needed! I thought because I can't wear a denture I would get some help...none...I have had the remaining two teeth removed, I can't wear a denture and so am stuck indoors with no life as I will not go out and face people like this. (Perhaps I could go on Jeremy Kyle!!) I am making an appeal to the NHS as this is not cosmetic. I doubt they will listen but I expect if I wanted a sex change or was morbidly obese I would get new bits and a gastric band pronto! There is no justice. I don't know what I will do.

Oh you poor thing, I'm disgusted you are not being given the help and treatment you so desperately need. Our teeth are important whether they be real or false and I can't believe the nhs would leave you in this situation. Hugs xx

Thank you very much for your message. I've worked in the NHS for 35 years, I feel like they owe me really. If I hadn't put up with rubbish wages then I wouldn't be in this situation. Thanks again.
