Hello I've come across a lot of good advice on supplements so I'm hoping I can get some advice on best probiotics to take with heavy duty antibiotics (doxycycline)?

Thank you

I’ve been using Optibac for a while and they seem ok. In the past I’ve used expensive probiotics that have to be refrigerated- these don’t. That means I can leave them around where I’ll remember to take them every day.

I find choosing a brand to be a total minefield. So many choices to make - how many bugs per capsule, price etc. So I’m glad I’m happy with Optibac they don’t cost all that much.

We found one on Amazon that say you can take them along with antibiotics rather than after them for my husband after he developed a post operative infection and had a few courses of antibiotics. Unfortunately I can’t remember what they were. He also drank those yoghurt drink things you get for gut health but I imagine they contain sugar.

You could also help your gut with things like sauerkraut, natural yoghurt, kefir etc. I also eat foods that contain probiotics such as onions and garlic.

Optibacs do a probiotic especially for those on antibiotics, I always take them when needed.

Hello Polly91! Well I take Protexin Balance capsules ( don't have to be refrigerated) that used to be available via Amazon but have been out of stock apparently. I get mine over the counter in a hospital pharmacy in Saudi where I work, reviews are good. They are fantastic and I swear by them. They contain a prebiotic as well as a probiotic and it would seem this is a good combination for those on antibiotics. Just a word of advice regarding commercial drinks/yogurts containing gut bacteria. They contain so little, they are unlikely to be very effective and yes you are correct, many contain sugar. They can also be highly processed products so be warned! Personally, I feel probiotics generally have made a significant difference to healing my gut and my rate of infections/virus's has greatly reduced. The last two lines of Fruitandnutcase's post gives very sound advice although I have not tried yet. I do hope you don't have to take antibiotics long term? Short term should not be too troublesome to gut bacteria. All the best, a brilliant decision. I believe any probiotic is better than none!

Thank you Baobabs. V helpful advice. I think if it is Lyme disease I will be on antibiotics for 3-4 weeks. Which is quite long unfortunately but I’d rather the infection be gone if it is that & I will take probiotics & natural probiotics. Thanks

All the best with your recovery from this nasty disease. Antibiotics are sometimes a very necessary evil so do take everyone. Probiotics will help enormously with your recovery. Wise move. I presume you have caught Lymes early? Anyway all the very best.

Thank you Baobabs. Sadly I don’t think early enough as I’m probably 8-9 months in. I just wish I had questioned things earlier. Thank you for your good wishes. X

Don’t blame yourself from what I’ve read it’s very difficult to get a diagnosis and 8-9 months is probably early compared to some people. Good luck with your treatment and hopefully you’ll be tip top soon.

Must have been that because - he ordered them himself and I imagine he would have started from Optibac because that’s what I have lying around. I definitely find them easier to use because they are not kept out of sight in the fridge and they suit me.
