Hi, just a quick question. Does anyone take Nature Throid for their hypothyroidism. I have just had a thyroid function test as my levels are STILL unstable, having had my dose lowered from 175mcg to 150, now my doctor wants to lower it even more as my T$ is still slightly high. I have been following a thyroid specialist on Facebook and he mentioned Nature Throid which he prescribes at his practice and I just wondered if it helps.

Hi Helen, can you post your test results with their ranges. What is t$?

NDT is right for some people but not for everyone.
What are your latest test results (with reference ranges) that causes your doctor to want to lower your dose?
If your FT4 is high or over range, you need to know what your FT3 is. If it's low in range your T4 to T3 conversion is poor, if it's over range you are overmedicated, The aim of a treated hypo patient generally is for TSH to be 1 or lower with FT4 and FT3 in the upper part of their ranges if that is where you feel well.
Helen... what you are taking now is synthetic T 4, the most abundant thyroid hormone. You also need T 3, another thyroid hormone. Docs presume that your liver will convert T 4 to any T 3 that your body requires. The rub is that some folks' liver doesn't do the conversion to T 3 (which is the 'energy/active' thyroid hormone) and their labs may look wonderful but their body isn't getting any T 3 and they feel miserable. So.... these folks may have to take a synthetic T 3 or a brand name extract that comes from pigs' thyroid glands in order to get their T 3. Naturethroid is one of the brand names for the thyroid extract that provides the full spectrum of thyroid hormones.
ps, taking NDT (prescription natural desiccated thyroid extract) isn't for everyone and you should have labs to make sure your D 3, B 12 and iron values are within optimal range. Otherwise, it might prove difficult to regulate your NDT dosage.
