NDT - where to get, can anyone recommend?

Hi all

I have been doing a lot of reading on here and STTM. I have thyroid and adrenal issues. I am on a really low dose of Levo (50mcg). Found GPs to be so unhelpful with my issues. I think I need to try NDT as I feel my hypo symptoms very bad again. I am saving up to get a full thyroid panel with T3 etc but thought I best be as prepared as possible (I have four month old, i have to be super organised or nothing gets done!)

I am wondering if anyone would be kind enough to pm me some recommended sources of NDT, particularly thai ndt?

I was taking Metavive which did help a little but i know theres no particular, if any, amount of hormone in it so it is time for me to think about NDT and try get my health on track!

Thanks for reading

Lou x

Do you have your latest test results? If you post them, with their reference ranges, we can see whether you are optimally medicated on Levo or whether you need a dose increase. 50mcg is only a starter dose so chances are you are very undermedicated.

Also, recent results for Vit D, B12, Folate and Ferritin will be useful. Thyroid hormone can't work properly if nutrient levels aren't optimal.

Have you had thyroid antibodies tested?

It's best to get all these tested and looked at before considering going down the NDT route, you may not need it, it can be difficult to get and you will have to self fund the NDT and private testing as your GP may not be willing to test if you self treat.

Hi, i will ask my GP for most recent thyroid results, it's only the basic one they run which is why i want to pay for the full panel!

They keep saying my iron is fine, but i take an iron supplement anyway as it helps my ME symptoms. I also take a B12 spray as again GP always say is fine. I also take the Vitamin d spray. I worked with a nutritional therapist a while back and she helped me get on a good alround supplement regime. Dont really have recent NHS bloods bar what they took when pregnant and when i gave birth in January as I honestly gave up fighting. Gp kept referring me to ME clinic and ME clinic refused to ask for tests and told me to just accept condition and take cbt!

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4, TT4, FT3 plus TPO and TG thyroid antibodies.

Plus very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

All thyroid tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting.

If on Levothyroxine, don't take in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take straight after. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, GP will be unaware)

If antibodies are high this is Hashimoto's, (also known by medics here in UK more commonly as autoimmune thyroid disease).

About 90% of all hypothyroidism in Uk is due to Hashimoto's. Low vitamins are especially common with Hashimoto's. Food intolerances common too, especially gluten. So it's very important to get antibodies tested.

50mcg is only a starter dose. You are likely under medicated

NHS guidelines saying standard starter dose is 50mcgs

beta.nhs.uk/medicines/levot...

It's important to get vitamins optimal first, TSH low and FT4 high by slowly increasing Levo dose

If you have Hashimoto's then very, very many find strictly gluten free diet essential too

If, after all these steps your FT3 remains low, then you will be ready to consider adding small dose of T3

Majority of patients on Levothyroxine need between 100mcg and 200mcg.

It should be increased slowly in 25mcg steps, retesting 6-8 weeks after each dose increase
