Hi all, I have just been diagnosed with Hashimoto ‘s thyroid disease. I am fortunate to have no symptoms but found a lump on my thyroid. As I have a sister with the disease and my other sister is type 1 diabetic it seemed an obvious diagnosis. My free t4 is 16.4 g(12.0-22.0), tsh (1.42(0.27-4.2) and tpo 184 (>34 positive)
For the moment my GP and I are taking a wait and see approach, with a view to starting thyroid supplements when the t4 drops or if I develop symptoms.
I have just started googling, and need advice on several things.
I am considering selenium supplementation
Should I have my vit D levels checked?
How helpful would a gluten free diet be?
Should I be on t4 supplement prophylacticly?
My sister is on gluten, sugar, dairy, alcohol and caffeine free diet. It makes cooking desserts difficult!
Many thanks
Sue

Yes ask GP to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12
These are often too low when we have Hashimoto's
Going strictly gluten free may help reduce TPO antibodies
Hashimoto's affects the gut and leads to low stomach acid and then low vitamin levels
Low vitamin levels affect Thyroid hormone working
Poor gut function can lead leaky gut (literally holes in gut wall) this can cause food intolerances. Most common by far is gluten.
According to Izabella Wentz the Thyroid Pharmacist approx 5% with Hashimoto's are coeliac, but over 80% find gluten free diet helps significantly. Either due to direct gluten intolerance (no test available) or due to leaky gut and gluten causing molecular mimicry (see Amy Myers link)
Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms, help gut heal and slowly lower TPO antibodies
Ideally ask GP for coeliac blood test first, along with vitamin tests
Have been having issues for awhile. Nodule and cyst on thyroid, all levels are fine tsh going up and down but normal. Thyroid is swelling also have muscle aches hand swelling and pain every morning.
