Low tsh and low t4 levels

Hi.

I've recently had my thyroid tested and I got my results back today. I was expecting to have an underactive thryorid giving my symptoms but my results are

TSH 0.261

T4 7.8

I've had more blood tests done today for b12, iron.. and have been asked to see the doctor again on Monday.

From what I can gather having low results on both indicate neither over active or under active but have more to do with my pituitary gland??

Can anyone shed any light on this for me. I'm completely new to all of this so feel a little out of my depth.

Thank you.

Could be your pituitary, or it could be the hypothalamus under-performing. It's what we call Central Hypothyroidism, meaning that is not the thyroid itself at fault.

Here are a couple of links that could help you understand better, and the tests that need to be done to confirm:

Thank you for posting these links. I have secondary hypothyroidism and this information is very interesting and informative for me also. Much appreciated😊

If you can post laboratory ranges alongside your thyroid results it would help us to interpret them and make some suggestions. Did your Doc test FT3 as well? And did you have results for thyroid antibodies, TPO and TgAb antibodies?

Great links from greygoose

The good news is (1) that your doctor has realised it could be a pituitary problem, and (2) that the treatment for central hypothyroidism is the same as for 'normal' hypothyroidism. It just means your blood tests are going to have to be more comprehensive, to get your FT4 and FT3 at good levels, not just your TSH. Doctors should do that with everyone, but they very often don't.

Hi.

Thanks for the replies. I've been away so only just caught up.

Went to see doctor this morning, it was a different doctor unfortinatly, and she isn't overly concerned at all. Said my results aren't low enough to warrant any future treatment and to come back in 6 weeks and be retested and take it from there. Gave me iron tablets because I'm really low there and sent me on my way. Brushed off the fact that both results are low...

I Have my results printout but can't figure out if I can attach a picture 🤔

Oh, also.. my ft3 wasn't tested and I can't see that any antibodies were tested. Apart from ths and T4 being low and ferritin being "abnormal" at 4 and "full blood count FBC being "abnormal" at 112 everything on my results came back normal.
