Thyroidectomy Nov 2017.
You should have been on your higher dose of Levo for 6 weeks before your blood test for the correct result. This latest blood drawn will not be a try picture of your levels.
How long had you been taking 150 mcg thyroxine?
Hi rjmwb2012,
Sorry to hear you have had to have your thyroid removed. Hope the medication kicks in quickly. You may need it increasing over time.
I was born with a partial non working gland so have been on medication all my life. I am currently on 200 mcg of T4 thyroxine (this is under review as my TSH was 4.57 in February, so might need to be increased) and 20 mcg of T3 Lithyronine.
Don't be alarmed whilst your medication is being sorted that you feel tired and may experience odema.
I would question everything and keep a record of your blood results and medication. The Professionals tend to go with one pill fits all theory but we are all different and have different needs.
We can live without our thyroid gland but not the hormones.
Lets hope you start feeling better soon and keep in touch.
Take care
I'm not quite sure what your question is. Now that you have no thyroid, you will be dependent on hormone replacement treatment. This replacement often needs a lot of turning to get your dose right.
Best practice is to be on a dose for 6 weeks, have a blood test, and raise or lower the dose based on what you see.
Sounds like after your operation you were given a standardized dose of 150mcg. A total guess as to what will suit you. Turns out for you that was probably very much too low. You've had a small little increase now, which is also the usual thing to do. You will likely need 2 or more increases like this before you get your numbers into decent shape.
You don't mention your symptoms. Based on these numbers you'd expect to feel pretty rubbish. I have also had a thyroidectomy. I was kept on a very ineffective dose for 6 months or more - they are not in a hurry to get us back on our feet. I was only getting blood tests every 3 months. I had similar numbers for a while, and was still in bed most of the time.
Sorry to read you are having an op. Hoping you have speedy recovery Ive just seen a endocrinologist yesterday and whilst discussing me taking 300 mg He said some patients need 400mg other than that Im clueless just wishing you well x
You still have some Thyroid tissue left after a partial Thyroidectomy but this has some nodules which are to be operated on when your Thyroid bloods are in normal range, is that correct?
