Thyroidectomy

I am scheduled for a total Thyroidectomy in two weeks because the AT meds are not working to get my TSH in normal levels. I remain <0.005 despite being on 25mg methimazole daily. I am nervous to have my thyroid removed and asking for other people’s experiences with removal of gland for autoimmune graves. Thank you…

Well, I'm no expert but that does not sound like a good reason to remove a thyroid! If your THS has been suppressed for a long time it may never rise ever again, no matter what you do, because the HPT axis has been down-graded.

Have you had your FT4 and FT3 tested recently? Were they still high?

I’ve had TT for Thyroid Cancer - but you’re specifically asking about Graves. Happy to talk to you about TT but this may not be info you want. Let me know

Hi, I would love to hear about your journey after surgery specifically relating to how you feel physically and how your medication (Levo, t3?) is working at stabilizing your levels. Did you gain weight afterwards while you got your levels correct? Thank you..

Welcome to the forum!

A TT is not uncommon, but it is a major and irreversible surgery that you should feel totally comfortable and prepared getting it, and not feel rushed into it, nor should you have unanswered questions.

There are vast numbers of people who are happy with the outcome of their TT. It may very well be right for you. But it is highly individual.

But we have also seen that a TT is the “easiest” option for the DOCTOR… not always the patient. You are the only one in the world who will need to live with the outcome. Not your doctor.

Self-education is paramount to your health and your well being.

It’s a lot scarier to worry and not know what you’re in for, than to ask the hard questions until you are comfortable with the answers - whatever those answers are.

Use this forum as a good source of shared experience and knowledge.

Also you should understand the health of your thyroid, the blood work, or ultrasounds or any other medical test your doctor did to arrive at this diagnosis.

How were you diagnosed, when, and what has your medication schedule been since that time?

What symptoms have you had?

Can you tell us if you have had the following blood tests and if so share these results (with ranges) and the date and times of the tests:

1) TSH

2) Free T3

3) Free T4

Plus these vitamins

4) ferritin

5) folate

6) B12

7)Vit D3

Have you had all four of these antibodies tested?

1) TRab

2) TSI

3) TPOab

4) TGab
