My thyroid tests have come back borderline once again even though I have had symptoms of hypothyroidism for years. Asked doctor today to try me on medication but she refused. Would it be dangerous to self medicate with ndt and where can I buy it? I feel at the end of my tether . Help please!

Hi

I have had three tests for thyroid TSH and T4 all out of range but doctor says wait and rheumatologist says if he put me on them my anxiety would hit the roof and I wouldn't be able to control it. But I'm really suffering in the meantime and don't know what to do

Have every sympathy for u but no advice , sorry other than get a second opinion

Please post your borderline results for comment. How are your levels of B12 -Folate - Ferritin - VitD ? If low in range then you will suffer hypo type symptoms.

What are your symptoms ? Are you taking any medications ? Gut issues ??

For full evaluation you ideally need TSH, FT4, FT3, TT4, TPO and TG antibodies, plus vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested

Essential to test antibodies and vitamins

See if you can get full thyroid and vitamin testing from GP. Unlikely to get FT3

Private tests are available

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

All thyroid tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. This gives highest TSH and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, GP will be unaware)

As Marz says, can you add your results and ranges

Hi kristabel9

Lots of people have been given no alternative but to self medicate, it’s not dangerous if you order from a reputable supplier and also follow advice on how to take it.

However, as others have already said they need to see all your results including lab ranges.

If your vitamin levels are low then no thyroid medication will help.

This forum has helped me no end, but they are also very responsible in that they don’t give out suppliers of NDT until they know your results etc and can offer you further advice.

Best Wishes
