Switching from synthroid to thyroid-S

I’m thinking of switching from synthroid to thyroid -s, should I just stop the synthroid all at once and start on 60mcg of Thyroid-s, or wean off the synthroid and slowly add in thyroid-S? I’m doing this on my own, as my Dr thinks I’m within range so I’m fine. My reverse T3 is in the high range, FT3 is low and FT4 is high. I think I would benefit with some T3 so I thought I would try it for awhile to see how I feel.

Cpav,

It will help members advise if you post your thyroid results and ranges and say how much Synthroid you are currently taking.

TSH<0.01. .32-4.00

FT4 18. 9-19

FT3 4.8. 3.1-6.2

RT3 22. 18-25

Antibodies 19. <35

I had been on 150mcg of synthroid till these results in Dec, I lowered myself to 125mcg because I was having palipatations.

I suffer from Graves’ disease and TED, I had RAI ablation 18 years ago. Dr says I’m hyper but I’m not feeling that, I have struggled with weight among other Hypo symptoms

Clutter will not have seen your reply as you did not click the Green Reply Button - so technically replied to yourself :-) Easily done !

Cpav,

125mcg Synthroid is equivalent to 2 grains of NDT. I would reduce Synthroid to 50mcg and introduce 1 grain (60mg) Thiroyd to see how you tolerate the T3 in Thiroyd. After a couple of weeks you can stop the Synthroid and increase Thiroyd to 2 grains.

You should expect very different results when you have your next blood test. FT4 will probably be considerably lower with FT3 higher in range.

Thank you wasn’t sure if I could take both, and I really don’t want any more Hypo symtems than I already have.

60mg of thyroid-s is equivalent to about 75mcg of Synthroid. So, if you completely switch over you would likely need more than one 60mg pill. One reason to do it at least a little gradually is that you don't know how you will react to taking T3. You could sub 60mg thyroid-s for half your Synthroid dose and see how it goes.
