How long have you been waiting for B12 injections to start?

Vitamin D - GP will probably on prescribe 800iu. Not anywhere near enough when we have Hashimoto's. Better You vitamin D mouth spray is good as avoids poor gut function. Perhaps try 3000iu daily. Retest after 2-3 months. Aiming for around 100nmol. Important not to take too much

Allie87,

VitD 800iu is insufficient to correct vitamin D deficiency. 800iu is a maintenance dose to be prescribed when vitD is replete >75. Your GP should refer to local guidelines or the NICE CKS recommendations for treating vitamin D deficient adults cks.nice.org.uk/vitamin-d-d... My sister's GP prescribed 2 x 20,000iu per week when vitD was 40 and my GP prescribed 40,000iu daily x 14 followed by 2,000iu daily x 8 weeks which raised vitD from <10 to 107. Vitamin D should be taken 4 hours away from Levothyroxine.

Ferritin is bottom of range and this may indicate iron deficiency anaemia. Your GP should do an iron panel and full blood count to check. If you are prescribed iron it should be taken 4 hours away from Levothyroxine.

I hope you've not been waiting 3 months for B12 injections and treatment for folate? It would be sensible if your GP checked whether pernicious anaemia is causing low B12 and folate deficiency. healthunlocked.com/pasoc are the experts on PA, B12 and folate if you want more information.

Yes waiting for 3 months for B12 injection before starting folic acid. GP receptionist told me to wait until there is an available slot for me to have next injection. Complete blood test result flagged up MCV 78.5 (83 - 98) MCHC 388 (310 - 360) Haemoglobin 113 (115 - 150) iron was 5.7 (6 - 26) transferrin 12 (12 - 45) thanks

Allie87,

If your GP says you need B12 injections and folic acid you should not be waiting 3 months. If you are B12 deficient you can suffer irreversible neuropathy. Please insist on a B12 inject next week and a prescription for folic acid to be taken 48 hours after the B12 injection.

You are iron deficient anaemic so you should be having treatment. Either an iron infusion or 3 x 210mg Ferrous Fumarate.

Please make an appointment with your GP to discuss all of your issues as soon as possible.
