Advice needed pregnant and breastfeeding

I'm currently breastfeeding my eleven month old and have just found out I'm pregnant. I'm unsure what I should be doing

My levo was increased in previous pregnancy but my tsh has gone up to 1.69 so its been increased again so I'm currently on 150mcg my concerns are around the breastfeeding and whether it can cause problems especially with an underactive thyroid I can't get to speak to my gp till Monday so I'm here for advice.

I have no symptoms no sickness nothing has anyone here fallen pregnant whilst breastfeeding with thyroid problems did it cause issues did you have wean the nursing baby?

Sorry I'm really anxious as I lost a baby back in 2015 so I'm terrified it will happen again as I didn't have symptoms then either

Thanks in advance

Congratulations, Nettiboo82!

Levothyroxine doesn't cross the milk barrier so your 11 month old won't become hypothyroid because your Levothyroxine dose has been increased.

The BTA recommend the TSH of women newly pregnant should be 0.4 - 2.5 so the dose increase you recently had should keep you nicely within that range but you should ask for a follow up test 4 weeks after the dose increase to be sure.

Hi clutter it's not my nursing baby I'm worried about I was hoping to wean about a year any way. I'm worried about the risk of miscarriage due to breastfeeding and because I have an under active and the lack of any symptoms.

nettieboo82,

As TSH is within the low-normal range you are unlikely to have a miscarriage due to hypothyroidism. Google "breastfeeding + miscarriage" to see whether breast feeding increases risk of miscarriage.

I did and nothing is conclusive apart from in thyroid disease weaning maybe advised but it didn't state if that was medicated or not

Nettiboo1982,

Hopefully, your GP will be able to advise on Monday.

I posted this earlier today :

You should search the document for any references to breastfeeding and lactation, and anything else that you think might be relevant.

Sorry I can't be more specific.

Edit : Congratulations and good luck - hope everything goes well for you. :)
