Some old blood tests

martinspencer_1967 profile image

Before I get a full thyroid panel test I've been looking back at some old blood test results, and they look very interesting.

I had TSH and T4 and some other bloods done by a Rheumatologist in July this year. Here's the results - any feedback appreciated.

TSH = 1.560 (Range 0.270 to 4.200)

Free T4 = 18.18 (Range 12.0 to 22.0)

Ferritin = 177.9 (Range 30 to 400).

B12 = 855 (Range 197 to 771)

Folate (Serum) = 6.4 (Range 3.9 to 26.8)

Vitamin D = 72.0

Also, in July 2016 I had the following blood test results.

TSH = 0.96 (Range 0.35 to 5.50)

Folate = 6.2 (Range not given)

Ferritin = 227 (Range not given)

Any feedback on these results would be really appreciated but it looks like I'm Hypothyroid to me?

Thanks,

Martin

They look euthyroid, to me.

Thyroid looks fine but folate is poor. A free T3 would have been useful as you might be a poor converter, Vitamin D could be better if you are in the UK (fine with US units)

What is it about those results that indicate Hypothyroidism to you Martin?

High TSH and low FT4 are indicators of hypo, neither of which you have.

Folate is on the low side, Vit D could be a bit higher if the unit of measurement is nmol/L (the Vit D Council recommends 100-150nmol/L), B12 and ferritin are good.

Maybe I've been mistaken about thyroid problem but I have all of the classic symptoms. But I do have MTHFR mutations which means I am unable to assimilate B12 properly. It's known that low folate can artificially increase B12 levels, but B12 isn't being utilised properly by my body. I've read somewhere that Folate should be about 15 to make use of B12 in someone with MTHFR mutations....maybe I have B12 defiency in my cells which needs to be checked out ?

If you know you have MTHFR mutations, have you checked your homocysteine and methylmalonic acid levels? These will tell you whether your folate and active B12 are high enough and metabolising properly.

I went to the metabolic unit at Salford Royal but I'm still waiting for my test results.

If the hospital knows about your MTHFR mutation, there's an outside chance they may have done these tests. These will probably be something you have to organise yourself. The UK medical profession is years behind some of its patients.

I know it's a sorry state of affairs when the patients know more than the doctors treating them. I'm seeing a functional doctor in December who will more than likely investigate all my bloods...well I hope so anyway?
