Hi I have just registered. I have blue horizon results saying my TSH is above range and free T4 below range. My GP won’t treat until TSH below 10 is that right? Thankyou

TSH *23.9 (0.2 – 4.2)

FREE T4 *10.4 (12 – 22)

FREE T3 3.1 (3.1 – 6.8)

THYROID PEROXIDASE ANTIBODY *475.3 (0 – 34 NEGATIVE)

THYROGLOBULIN ANTIBODY *356.2 (0 – 115 NEGATIVE)

Hi me_shell and welcome :-)

It might be best to post the results, as in numbers and reference ranges too :-)

Your TSH is above 10 and so your GP should treat you for hypothyroidism. Best make an apt. However they will likely send you for another blood test and go by those results, as mine seemed to be a bit disgruntled that I had gone private. Your Free T4 needs to be higher, which being on levothyroxine should help with. And it should be closer to 22 than 12

Both my antibodies that you have listed above were similar to your readings and my doctor wouldn't even consider the prospect of me having hashi's. Dismissed them pretty much altogether.

And your Free T3 needs to be higher, closer to 6.8 so top end of the range instead of lower end.

Good Luck!

JillO :-)

It would be easier for members to comment if you don't mind posting your results with their reference ranges, alongside the results of any other tests you had done, like vitamin and mineral levels (with their reference ranges).

For hypothyroidism, the magic number (so to speak) is TSH 10 or more. However, there are some GPs who might be prepared to prescribe a trial of thyroid supplementation depending on other results and symptoms. E.g., if you have a TSH that is above the reference range but <10, with indicative symptoms, and positive antibodies, for some GPs this can be enough for a trial, where a good response confirms the diagnosis and a continuing prescription for Levo.

So, if you can edit your post to include your BH results that would be very helpful.

As above - your TSH is clearly high above the range and into hypothyroidism territory even without the back-up of your antibodies, FT4 and FT3. Have you booked an appointment with your GP to discuss these results?

If you didn't have your vitamin and mineral levels down with your BH then ask your GP if you can have them as s/he might want some NHS tests as well. Hashimoto's tends to go arm in arm with poor absorption which is why vitamin and mineral levels can show multiple deficiencies that it can be helpful to address.

Assuming it's confirmed as Hashimoto's, you can read about it here: thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/about_...

Let us know how you get on with your GP.

Ask for a copy of your vitamin and mineral results and please post them when you obtain them. I think Seaside Susie and several other members tend to say, "Normal is an opinion, not a fact" and having your vitamins and minerals within the range that Hashimoto people find helpful can be very different to the 'normal' range. :)

blue horizon says I have hashimotos

Hi - yes you do. That is an auto-immune form (90% of all hypothyroid), which means your immune system is mistakenly attacking your thyroid, gradually destroying it. There is a strong association between this and food intolerances, usually gluten but sometimes also dairy and/or soy. For this reason it is always recommended that a trial of a strict gluten free diet for at least 3 months to see if it makes a difference. A good selenium supplement will also help.

There are lots of references in threads for the likes of Chris Kresser, Isabella Wentz and others. Search for gluten free or leaky gut in the box at top.

Indeed you do, as confirmed by your high antibodies

THYROID PEROXIDASE ANTIBODY *475.3 (0 – 34 NEGATIVE)

THYROGLOBULIN ANTIBODY *356.2 (0 – 115 NEGATIVE)

Hashi's is where antibodies attack and gradually destroy the thyroid. You can help reduce the antibodies by adopting a strict gluten free diet which has helped many members here. Gluten contains gliadin (a protein) which is thought to trigger autoimmune attacks so eliminating gluten can help reduce these attacks. You don't need to be gluten sensitive or have Coeliac disease for a gluten free diet to help.

Supplementing with selenium l-selenomethionine 200mcg daily can also help reduce the antibodies, as can keeping TSH suppressed.

Hashi's and gut/absorption problems go hand in hand and frequentlhy dire nutrient levels are a result. Your other thread with your nutrient results show exactly that. SlowDragon has information and links to help.

Hashimoto's very often affects the gut, leading to low stomach acid, low vitamin levels and leaky gut.

Low vitamins that affect thyroid are vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12. If they are too low they stop Thyroid hormones working.

Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms.

Just don't be surprised if GP not up to speed on this, though they may consider testing for coeliac

Most with Hashimoto's are gluten intolerant (no test available) but about 5% are positive for coeliac if tested (endoscopy only reliable test)
