Hi, first post please be gentle!.....

Diagnosed hypothyroid around 15 years ago. Have been on 125mcg Levothyroxine since then with no issues until September last year when a blood test showed increased TSH

TSH 10.6 0.38 - 5.33

Free T4 8.6 7.0 - 16.0

My doctor then increased my Levothyroxine to 150mcg and after 6 weeks blood test results were

TSH 0.006 0.38 - 5.33

Free T4 16.3 7.0 - 16.0

Free T3 5.1 3.8 - 6.0

I feel much better on the increased dose but worry as my TSH is suppressed and T4 slightly over range.

Am I at risk of hyperthyroidism?

Thank you in advance

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Short answer is no, your T3 had to be over range for that to happen and it looks like you have a bit of scope there. If you're felling better then that increase is working.

You are hypo, therefore you cannot become hyper, it's a physical impossibility. You can be over-medicated, but your FT4 is only slightly over-range, so that's not a problem.

Your problem is, however, that you don't convert very well. If you feel good on that dose, then that's fine. But, increasing the dose of levo in order to increase your FT3, would not be a good idea, your FT4 would become too far over-range. If you need an increase, the best idea would be to add in some T3, and reduce the levo.

Suggest checking levels of vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12. If these are too low they will be stopping you be able to use thyroid hormones.

Also have you had thyroid antibodies tested? If not ask that they are to see if cause is autoimmune thyroid disease also called Hashimoto's

Not what you're looking for?
