Hyper: vitamin/mineral advice requested

Hi there. As I am in the minority, being recently (Feb 2017) diagnosed as hyper, can I check whether the advice given about vitamin/mineral testing for deficiencies applies to me, as well as to the other members, who are predominantly hypo? Saw my endo for the first time 29th April, disappointed with his lack of interest or information re: Graves, which he said I had. Carbimazole is working well for me, T4 back within range after 6 weeks, but I forgot to ask about testing for vitamin levels at my next blood test. Would it be helpful, do you think? Talk of B12 and D seems to crop up a lot on this forum, and magnesium and selenium. Is that generally useful for someone with autoimmune disease? Thanks - I have learned so much from this page. BTW, he suggested RAI as an option, before saying my thyroid may correct itself within 12 months. Bonkers!!

Hi shuttergirl, there are quite a few of us on here that have graves. I was diagnosed. 20yrs ago and was on and off carbimazole for 12yrs then had Rai ( worse thing I ever did) so now hypo. Yes vitamins are as important for us as you can very often be low in these so would suggest you get test for B12, ferritin, folate, and vit D, these need to be at least halfway through the ranges, gp will say anything in range is fine.in my experience gp and endo don't know much about vitamins or thyroid for that matter.you can see if gp will test for vitamins levels but from my experience they won't test all especially vitD so you might have to go down the private route for them which is easy enough the ones we use on here are medicheck and blue horizon both are good.dont know if your having trouble with your eyes as with Graves desease you can have thyroid eye desease selenium is good to take for that.e endo rarely tell you much about graves desease usually just take these tablets and you will be feeling better in a few weeks, you need to read everything you can and educate yourself there's lots of people on here who are very knowledgeable, ive learnt more on here in the last 6 months than I did in the last 20yrs.

Thanks, Raventhorpe. I will contact my GP and see if she will add vitamin and mineral testing to the list. She is newly qualified and cheerfully admits she knows little about the finer details of thyroid disease, and is very amenable, thank goodness. I have been on a very steep learning curve for the last few months! Coincidentally I had an eye test too last week and was told everything was normal except for dryness, and I am fortunate to have an eye specialist in the family, so was checked over this weekend. Thank you for your advice.
