You have high TPO antibodies which means you have autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's). TSH 5.62 is over range which means your thyroid is struggling to produce T4 and T3. Your GP should prescribe Levothyroxine.
The goal of Levothyroxine is to restore the patient to euthyroid status. For most patients that will be when TSH is 1.0 or lower with FT4 in the upper range. FT4 needs to be in the upper range in order that sufficient T3 is converted. Read Treatment Options in thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/about_... Email louise.roberts@thyroiduk.org.uk if you would like a copy of the Pulse article to show your GP.
There is no cure for Hashimoto's which causes 90% of hypothyroidism. Treatment is for the low thyroid levels it causes. Many people have found that 100% gluten-free diet is helpful in reducing Hashi flares, symptoms and eventually antibodies.
Hi clutter, Thanks very much for your reply. I'm in with my doctor tomorrow so I'll have a read of the links and hopefully they can start me on medication. My doc knows that we are going to ttc later in the year so I guess it would be important to be on the medication
You should tell your GP you are planning conception. It's recommended the TSH of women planning conception should be in the low-normal range 0.4 -2.5 otherwise conception may be difficult and if pregnancy is achieved the risks of miscarriage increase when TSH is >2.5. Levothyroxine dose is usually increased by 25-50mcg when pregnancy is confirmed to ensure good foetal development and the avoidance of post-partum psychosis.
