Gary19610 I though you'd got some Jarrows sublingual B12 - that's the only way to take B12. Swallowing a tablet or capsule means the stomach acid will destroy B12, it has to be taken sublingually as a supplement. Also, the 400mcg in that supplement is nowhere near enough to raise B12 level.

You also asked about a separate selenium supplement and has suggestiond, I linked to a very small, easy to take one from Cytoplan. Have you changed your mind?

I can't see any iron in that, and if it contained it then it would prevent the absorption of other vitamins and minerals, iron has to be taken separately, at least two hours away from anything else. To raise your ferritin/iron level you will need an iron supplement to be taken with 1000mcg to aid absorption and prevent constipation, or eat 120-150g liver once a week.

It also contains calcium which you shouldn't supplement unless you know you have a deficiency.

Gary19610 B12 should be taken in the morning, no later than lunchtime, along with a B Complex to balance the B vits. This is because B vits can be stimulating and if taken later in the day could disturb sleep.

Selenium is a mineral which are normally advised to be taken in the evening. You could take your selenium with your evening meal.

Is there a reason you are looking at a multi? They are generally not a good idea, definitely not multi vitamins. They don't contain enough of anything to help and are usually the wrong forms. Also that's a Holland & Barrett own brand which is probably one of the worst you can buy. If you are thinking of the B vits, the amounts are very low and it contains folic acid where folate would be better and the B12 is cyanocobalamin which is the wrong form.

A multi mineral can be a good idea as long as it is a good brand, contains the correct form of ingredients and doesn't contain iron, calcium and iodine.

Gary19610 There are eight B vitamins - B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12. Most have their own particular job to do and some work together. When we take B12 as a supplement because our level isn't high enough, we need a B Complex to keep all the B vits in balance.

The best way for B12 to be absorbed (taken by mouth rather than injections) is sublingually. There are small blood vessels under the tongue. Dissolving the B12 lozenge slowly under the tongue (30-60 seconds) means the blood vessels take the B12 directly into the bloodstream so it is absorbed better as it bypasses the stomach.

A sublingual B12 can be taken without food.

Gary19610 Multivitamins are a waste of time and money. As I said, they don't contain enough of an ingredient to help, and frequently the wrong form.

As an example, the one you have pictured above contains

Vit D - 1000iu - just about enough as a maintenance dose for someone with an optimal level, not enough to help anyone whose level needs raising.

Vit A as Beta carotene, the correct form to take is Retinyl Palmitate (but it's more expensive)

Vit C - 100mg. We Hypos need at least 2000mg daily.

B1, B2, B5, B6 - all these are just 5mg. Much more is needed, 25mg would be OK, 50mg even better.

B12 - 20mcg. A maintenance dose would be 1000mcg. It's also cyanocobalamin and should be methylcobalamin - see naturalnews.com/032766_cyan...

Calcium - we shouldn't take it if we've not been tested and found to be deficient

Iodine - we shouldn't take it if we've not been tested and found to be deficient

Magnesium - 125mg. Most of us are deficient in magnesium and the normal dose is about 350mg. It contains magnesium oxide which is the cheapest and least absorbable form.

Vit K is K1-Phytomenadione which is the blood clotting form and we should take K2-menaquinone which is the correct form to use when taking Vit D.

I could go on but I'm losing the will I'm afraid.

If you want to take vitamins, find out where you have any deficiencies and supplement those. Plus Vit C.

Stomach acid certainly won't destroy b12.

It's a lack of stomach acid that actually worsens the situation.

You need acid to break down the b12 so it's picked up by the intrinsic factor and transported to the ilium.
