Can anybody please tell if they have heard of thyroid support formula containing iodine and selenium. 2 to 3 capsules per day. And ocean kelp with iodine. 1 to 2 tablets per day. Can I take these to help my underactive thyroid.

They won't help your under-active thyroid unless it is under-active due to iodine deficiency. Have you had your iodine tested? Sounds like that would be a massive dose, anyway, even if you were deficient. Iodine is only a trace element, you don't want bucketsful of it.

Hello Phoenix

It would be far better for you to ask your doctor about supplements.

Take care

I would disagree about asking doctors about supplements. Doctors only believe in stuff that they prescribe, and they get almost no training on nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and other things like that, because doctors consider supplements to be quackery and woo. Nor would I ask a doctor for dietary advice.

I agree with most things. But to mess with a Thyroid could have nasty results. Ths my recommendation to consult a doctor in this case.

In an ideal world, of course you would consult first.

I am trying to imagine an appointment with a typical NHS GP to ask about iodine and selenium supplementation.

Things that come to mind as possible outcomes:

Wait of weeks before you can get a non-urgent appointment.

Incredulous expression as you say why you are there.

Incredulous expression as the GP realises you expect a sensible answer.

A mental pause while inwardly rehearsing the local, approved version of "We don't do that here." in response to "Can you test my iodine and selenium levels?"

Another pause trying to remember the stock answers: "The UK is iodine replete." and "If you are worried about selenium you could always try some brazil nuts."

The most extraordinarily unlikely outcome would be to get offered tests for iodine and selenium, an offer of a future appointment to discuss the results, notes taken of the iodine and selenium content of the proposed "support formula", a discussion of current diet (e.g. dairy-free makes it more difficult to achieve iodine repletion). Followed by a discussion about why the original poster feels the need to look at such products - what are the ongoing symptoms?, do you need another thyroid test?

We all here agree that messing with a thyroid can have nasty results. That is why we are so careful about things like iodine supplements and advice.

Try Pure, Thyroid support, but its really expensive and hard to find.

If you feel you need a supplement then I am thinking you aren't feeling particularly good on what you have been given?

Have you any results and ranges you can add? The ranges are important as they differ from lab to lab so without them we are only guessing, easier if we know all the facts.

Sometimes we can be on a reasonable dose but other things in our body aren't helping us. Tests are also important for Vit D, B12, folate and ferritin. Thyroid people are often low in these but we need them to be optimal, not just 'in range' as they help the conversion of the inactive hormone T4 to convert to the active T3 that every cell in our body needs to function well. Your brain needs the most.

So many of us supplement what our body is short of, iodine can be one of them but requires testing before looking at that and it seems to be a no no if you have antibodies which 90% of us have. So better forget about those and concentrate on the ones I've mentioned.
