In regards to low ferritin levels... What can I take instead of Biotin? I do not want to be taking anything that affects my levels but want to take something that is hopefully going to improve my hair loss.

I have B12 and Vit D... Is there a ferritin and folate vitamin? xx

You can still take biotin. I've read about biotin and the effect it has on thyroid testing.

endocrinenews.endocrine.org...

The biotin is not harming you it is affecting the machine that does the testing. If you want to continue taking biotin you can do. But if you know you have blood testing coming up, then stop taking biotin for a few days. Probably stopping for three days would be sufficient. You can start again after the blood tests have been done.

Thank you Humanbean! Does Biotin have nasty side effects? x

I don't know, I've never knowingly taken it. It appears to make testing machines go on the blink, but that's all I know. :D

I have been having hair loss to and am now eating a large portion of liver once a week to raise my iron levels I thought I'd try the natural way

If you level of iron, whether ferritin or haemoglobin is low, then unfortunately just eating iron rich food won't raise it. This is because the amount of food you need to eat to get sufficient iron is more than you can actually physically consume. You actually absorb very little iron from the food you consume.

You need to supplement the iron and once you get your level high enough then you can try eating red meat, offal and other iron rich food regularly during the week to keep your levels up.

In regards to biotin you need to be very careful as too much can lead to an imbalance with vitamin B5. The same with folate and vitamin B12. So you are better of taking a good B complex with all of them in so they are balanced.

Not what you're looking for?
