Hello!

I have to take a second dose of my Nature-Throid in the afternoon and as It is supposed to be taken on an empty stomach I was wondering if it was still okay to drink Diet Coke or coffee within an hour before or after taking it?? I'm missing my afternoon caffeine hit!

Thanks very much!

It isn't alright to take diet coke under any circumstances for any reason. Do you know what those artificial sweeteners are doing to your brain and body? It's poison! And, it won't make you lose weight, it will probably make you put on more.

It's not alright to take your NDT with coffee, either. The caffeine impedes the absorption of thyroid hormone. Sorry.

You're meant to take thyroid hormone on an empty stomach but consistency is key. If you're going to take it the same way every day, as long as you don't struggle w being undermedicated I don't think it makes a lot of difference. If you change the way you take it, for instance you quit coffee and take it w water instead, you could absorb it more efficiently and become a little overmedicated.

One of the reasons for taking levo on an empty stomach is because it is absorbed without impediment, but also a lot of people just aren't given access to enough meds to make them feel well, so taking on an empty stomach gives you more bang for your buck. If you have free access to meds which can be taken in quantities that mean you're optimally medicated, that will be less important. Does that make sense?

I have never drank tea or coffee purely because I don't like them but did used to drink diet coke. I only had one or 2 a day but can safely say I was addicted. Stopped drinking it several years ago and suffered withdrawals at first but glad I no longer have the awful stuff. Convinced that's why I have so many dental issues :-(

I agree with puncturedbicycle though. You aren't meant to have it with food either but some days I just can't fit everything in (supplements etc..) or I forget to take it in time so do end up having my afternoon dose just before lunch and I don't feel like it has a negative effect. I self medicate though so not dependant on a dose set by my gp.

Why don't you take your NDT once daily. Much easier and you can have a life. The manufactuers of Nature Throid state one daily dose.

That's what I do. I have enough trouble remembering if I've taken one dose, let alone multiple doses. ;)

I wouldn't drink Diet Coke ever as the artificial sweeteners are very bad for you and can actually make you fatter. Coffee should be OK after an hour.
