Advice on Blood results please

I wondered if someone might shed some light on my Blue Horizon blood test results (thyroid-11). A bit concerned they suggest I see my GP (yikes). I'm on 3 grains NDT (Naturthroid).

My Ferritin level is high which is the concern as I don't take any iron supplements. Anyone have an idea if this has anything to do with taking NDT? Haven't seen my GP since last November when he said he wouldn't monitor me if I went down private route! I can see him now tutting and raising his eyebrows 😬

KarBon,

The BH doctor won't know that you are taking NDT and is probably concerned that the suppressed TSH may indicate subclinical hyperthyroidism. Your FT4 and FT3 are mid range so you are not over medicated.

Thyroid antibodies are negative for autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's).

High ferritin can indicate inflammation or infection somewhere in the body. I would retest in 3-4 months. If it remains high your GP might want to order a full blood count.

B12 >500 is unlikely to be deficient but many like B12 high in range so you could supplement 1,000mcg methylcobalamin with a B Complex vitamin.

Vitamin D and folate are good.

Thanks Clutter. Think I just got a bit worked up as my iron was ok before and not knowing if I should up my NDT or lower it started me panicking. Thanks for all your advice X

If you take supplements check them all very carefully to see if they contain iron. I've found unexpected and unwanted ingredients in pills a few times. You should avoid anything with iron in it.

Ask your doctor for a full iron panel to be done. If one iron-related level is causing concern I think it is important to check the others. And it might give you clues to why your ferritin is high in the first place.

Hi humanbean. Thanks for replying. Managed to get GP appointment yesterday afternoon. To my surprise he was very understanding about me taking NDT. He'd done some research after my visit in November and actually told me he believed it worked but his hands were tied by GMC. He's sending me for full iron panel, but said it was to check results were same as mine as he didn't know/trust who BH were! I'll check my supplements carefully too as I didn't think to look at that.
