Recovery from thyroid surgery.

Hello my friends,

I recently had a thyroid lobectomy, right lobe, and am on day 4 post op. I am doing ok, but have numbness in my face, hands, feet. I went into the hospital and had my calcium levels checked on day 2 post op, and they were fine.

Is this a normal feeling to have after thyroid surgery?

I am also experiencing hot/cold flashes and internal tremors.

Any advice?

DanteNXS,

Those symptoms are typical of low calcium due to loss or bruising of parathyroid glands. I had similar symptoms after completion thyroidectomy but wasn't well enough to collect a prescription for calcium. Calcium levels righted themselves after a week. Maybe hang on until your stitches are removed and ask for another calcium test if symptoms haven't resolved.

I didn't experience the hot/cold flashes and internal tremors. They may be a post-op reaction and will hopefully improve when all the anaesthetic has cleared your system.

Nitrous oxide in general anaesthetic can interfere with B12 levels. It may help to supplement high dose B12 for a few weeks.

You should take it easy and rest for a couple of weeks.

Thanks Clutter,

I have no stitches to remove, they used a surgical glue. My b12 is still very high, but I am taking a multi which has it and calcium.

The hot/cold flashes, and tremors are infrequent, but noticeable.

I'll stick it out until next week.

My doc still has me taking propranolol, which makes me very lightheaded, hopefully I can get off it soon.

DanteNXS,

The NO sort of neutralises the B12 you have for a while, it doesn't make it deficient or low.

Perhaps you could start weaning off the Propranolol now the hot nodule is gone and hyperactive symptoms should have resolved.

I hope you feel better in a few days.

Ok, I will take the methyl b12 and see how that goes. As for the propranolol, I am only taking 7.5mg 3 times a day, which is very low. I will cut it down to 5mg.

I am very sensitive to meds and it doesn't take much to affect me.

Thanks again

Hi Dante, I'm sorry, I can't answer any of your questions, no experience of any of that. But, wise words from Clutter.

Just wanted to wish you well, and express the hope that this is the end of all your problems. :)

Happy recovery Dante,

Lets hope it's a quick one.

I always think internal tremors are adrenal issues and will probably improve as your body recovers from the shock of surgery.

Hey radd,

I'm hoping for a quick recovery as well, no thyroid hormone was prescribed, as the ENT thinks that the remaining 60% will function well, once it kicks into gear.

Thanks for the positive thoughts.

That was quick or time just passes so fast as it feels like yesterday when you posted about getting that operation!

I hope you will recover fast! :)

Yeah, they scheduled my surgery pretty quickly. I think it was 10 days after seeing the ENT.

Thanks
