I am 1.5 weeks post op. The scar is awful. I didn't get advice other than use soap and water from my surgeon. I got an otc product called Scar Away which is silicone based. I started using it 5 days after surgery. I am wondering what I should be using on the scar for optimal healing... I hate scarfs but ...

I think silicone based is good, I have used Stratamed.
Supplementary have used also the onion extract based Contractubex, applied alternatively but clinical studies do not really support it.
Key is consistency, I think. I have been very insistent in using it for 2 or 3 months after surgery (i think starting week 3, can't remember exactly, but it needs a clean, closed wound to work with) and got extremely good results, hairline scar, visible only if you know to look for it. I have had the same concerns about the horrible scar that would remain...it didn't. Just apply the scar cream at least 2/3 times a day, paired with massage of the line, avoid direct sun exposure in the first year (sun block it if you must) and it should be fine.
Hang in there! You are only 1.5 weeks post op and you've got to let it heal. Please make sure to follow the surgeon's instructions for after care. Be careful not to fiddle with the scar too much. It will take some time to heel. Sometimes you're given a steroid antibiotic. Did he/she give you one? If you're uncertain about after care, give him/her a call and speak with him/her. Ask if it's safe to start massaging the scar so soon. Do you have a follow up appointment?
Yes, definitely avoid direct sun at all times for at least a year otherwise it won't heal properly. Cover with a scarf or a shirt or sweater that covers that area. If you're used to more of an open chest, there are some cute styles that are closed up in the thyroid area, but cut out in the chest area.
Hi I used frankincense oil and coconut oil mixed fifty fifty for the scar on my neck had extremely good results
Hi, you are still very early post op. Any scar is going to look quite angry and noticeable this early on and I think you are worrying way too soon. After about a month the nurse at my post op TT check up told me to moisturise the scar with my normal face cream daily. The scar looked quite red and I was very aware of it for about 6 months though others did not seem to notice it. Also in time it seemed to sink further down my neck which made it less visible, sitting in that natural crease at the bottom of the neckline. Mine is now just a fine white line and is barely visible. Just requires patience I am afraid (hard I know and I am not known for mine!!!)
I've had two neck ops and was told not to put anything on it until it's healed, if it's still open you risk infection.
Thanks for all of your responses... I have an appt. with my Derm. doc. tomorrow. I know one thing she will tell me is to be patient.... I want to get back to my exercise (Pickleball) and am worried about making this keloid like scar stretch even further.... I wonder if I should apply a silicone strip, I think it"s called Caci (?) or would that be more caustic...
I guess I will be learning how to wear a scarf...headed to Vegas in June... why me?
If you would like to PM me I’ll see if there is a Scarworker near you.
