My son is 12. He's 5ft 5" tall and about 10.5 stone. He gains weight rapidly. He's been very cold recently and tired. Pale complexion and brown around his eyes. We took him to our gp and he ran some blood tests. He said our son had gained over 6 stone in 4 years. He hit puberty very early at age 9/10. He suffers low mood and anxiety/panic attacks and has had to have therapy to help him overcome it. My poor boy was bullied all last year which was a big trigger for his anxiety.
Our gp was concerned especiallyas I have hypothyroidism so ran tests. Which I attach here for any advice please. My gp has commented them as all normal.
Sorry to post twice today. I've already posted asking questions about my issues. I've just had this info about my son. I'm due to start thyroxine this weekend. My ft4 is 15.7 and tsh 9.28. I'm worried is my son following in my foot steps.
It seems daughters follow their Dads and sons their Mums Reaching puberty so young could indicate hormonal issues connected to the thyroid. I think they call it Precocious Puberty if you are wanting to Search.
His TSH is high enough to indicate the thyroid is struggling and the FT4 is certainly LOW in the range. Maybe have the anti-bodies tested and the FT3 to show the bigger picture. What did your GP think of the results ? They do so many tests but not the ones you need .....
How are his levels of Ferritin - B12 - Folate - Iron and VitD ?
He has possibly been struggling with his thyroid for some time. Sometimes Low B12 and others can cause some of the symptoms you mention.
Gp marked his results as normal. As they did mine when my tsh was 6.54 earlier this year!!!!! They even tried to tell me my tsh at 9.28 was normal earlier this week. Crazy.
He has hypothyroidism symptoms definitely. My mums hypothyroid as am I.
Gp only did fbc. No individual iron counts. No ferritin, b12 etc. Which is annoying.
I will wait a month then u think do a private one. I'm having to do mine with bh every 6 weeks now I've been diagnosed all because the nhs onlying do basic tsh and t4. Now it looks like I have to monitor my sons condition myself. It's so wrong.
My gp suggested nothing further. Just said results all fine therefore he's ok. That's what they do. I was extremely symptomatic, bed ridden for 2 weeks at one point and he came to visit me at home, took bloods, all were fine in his eyes so he told me I had depression and totally ignored my chronic fatigue and sheer body weakness. Told me my balance issues were just anxiety. Now they're just treating my son the same.
Sorry you are having a difficult time to receive the treatment you deserve. I continue to be saddened by the number of people that do NOT question their Docs and remain ill or on too many drugs.
Jingy, if your doctor is willing to do your TSH and FT4, there's no need to do private tests for FT3 until your TSH comes down to about one. I think we can take it as given that your FT3 is low at the moment, why spend money proving it? It only becomes important when your TSH is below one, your FT4 high, but you still have symptoms.
These were my sons results we were discussing and getting private tests for? Is that what you meant? My GP won't be re testing my son as he has marked his results as totally normal. Me on the other hand are having my tests done privately as I am not well enough to go to a clinic at 8am due to being so poorly and being left like this for almost 9 months. It's far easier for me to have them done early in the morning fasted at home than go to a clinic also due to the fact I have no childcare at all and 3 children to get to school. My husband is in work for 7am. So it fits in with us to test myself privately because of these 2 problems. I also went private in the first place because my GP told me my bloods were all fine back in January when my TSH was high, he told me I was looking for things wrong with me and he wasn't going to test my thryoid ever again. Madness!
No, I was talking about you. You said you needed to have your bloods Done privately every six weeks because your doctor would only test the TSH and FT4. I was saying that you Don't need your FT3 tested until your TSH gets down to around one, because your TSH is telling you your FT3 is low. If I were you, I would save money by getting my TSH and FT4 done on the NHS for the time being. That's all I was saying.
But, if you're doing it for convenience, then that's a different matter.
There's no limit to the amount you can post. If it is necessary, you just post whatever you wish.
I think your son is hypothyroid and also to confirm take his pulse and a Basal Temp test before he gets out of bed in the morning. Both are usually low. I'll give details further down.
I did my temperature on waking today and it was 36.4. I shall take his tomorrow.
If you have time could you please take a look at my post from earlier today? I always appreciate your advice.
Thank you.
Julie
I agree with Marz. get private test for antibodies. Ferritin also v important.

I will for sure. Going to give it a month or so then test them all and antibodies.
I forgot to add last year he suddenly out of nowhere couldn't walk..it took a month, 3 gp appointments and 3 hospital appointments before he was diagnosed with achillies tendinitis. Sorry if I've spelt that wrong. He was suffering from it for about 3 months. He had physio and was on crutches for a while.
I really feel for you. I have a similar situation with my 12 year son as well. He's 5'2" & 9 1/2 St with TSH right at top of range. Catches every illness going and would spend all weekend and school holidays sleeping if he could. Has also had issues with being bullied and high anxiety levels.
Gp referred him to paediatrician who has tried to find excuses not to go down thyroid route even though it's prevalent in my family. So I've been a good subservient girl had his eyes tested to see if this is why he can't concentrate and spoken to the school about a change of learning group. Although the paediatrician requested a referral to CAMHS, they didn't feel he needed it, neither do I as I'm sure his anxiety levels are down to thyroid. Just waiting for his next appointment to find out results of the latest blood test as no matter how hard I try they are resisting giving them to me beforehand. They've also tested for coeliac so might be considering gluten free for the both of us also.
Looks like we both have a fight on our hands, so wishing you good luck and a happy outcome. ☺
So sorry you are going through this with your son also. I know how hard it is when your child suffers anxiety and it's hell. Feel free to message me anytime if you need to talk.
Let me know how your sons results are, I'd be interested to follow your story and I hope he gets the appropriate treatment.
