If possible it is wise to leave at least 2 hours between levo and antiibiotics. I have been on long courses of antibiotics for recurrent UTI's, I take my levo in early hours of morning as I always need the loo in the night. Take my antibiotic with my breakfast and my second one before bed. I do find they make me feel a bit queasy so I make sure I take them with food. Hope this helps and your infection clears up soon

Hi wednesday, I've been taking my Eltroxin (same as levo, I think) and my daily antibiotic at the same time. Thanks to your advice, I'll leave a couple of hours between them. My six-month course of antibiotics is also because of recurrent UTIs. The infections have been recurring for almost two years and although lab tests confirm they're there, no specialist -- and I've seen urologists, surgeons and even a gynae -- can find out why they recur. I'm dreading coming to the end of this course as I just can't afford more specialists giving more tests and coming up with no answers. Might I ask what your docs have said about your UTIs? Any clues? Thanks so much.

Hi Stevie, I am on Nitrofurantoin as Trimethropin don't work for me. I have had this problem over 10 years now, had a TVT mesh fitted 8years ago for incontinence and the infections just increased. I have seen urologists had camera's in my bladder and the rest but yet no one can say exactly why I get them. My last appointment was two weeks ago and the Consultant told me that I am not getting recurrent infections, I am getting an infection that does not clear with first course of antibiotics, so it them becomes harder to treat. He says because I have had a hysterectomy and bladder op that I am more prone to infections but he would like to get them down to a couple a year ( if only). I have been given Vagifem pessaries but haven't found them much good so far, and I can only have them for six months which is nearly up. I have had what appears to be eight infections in a few months, but Consultant says its the same infection. I do worry about the amount of antibiotics I am taking and have taken in the past, but after a particular bad kidney infection I don't have a choice. Have tried natural products (DMannose) but they sadly didn't work for me, though some swear by them. I do sympathise with you, luckily I am in England so we have our NHS.

Thanks so much for your response, wednesday. I appreciate you taking the time. Sorry to hear of your years-long battle. I've been wondering if my infections were actually the same infection that was not being properly cleared up each time, so I was interested to hear that's what your consultant thinks. I had a major colon op several years ago and at one point my surgeon thought that may have something to do with it. A colonoscopy showed that was not the case. Among the many other procedures I've had was a small op to widen the urethra but that didn't work, either. I've been the Vagifem route, too, with no success. As you say, it's very worrying being on antibiotics for so long but what other choice is there? I'm English but I live in South Africa where our medical fees are horrendous. I asked about your situation in the hopes we might stumble across a common "trigger", but it doesn't seem so. Our experiences do sound very similar, though, so I sympathise with you greatly. Go well, and if you ever do find that magic cure, please let me know!!!

I wasn't sure where you lived but realised you would have to pay for your medication. I had my Uretha stretched too but didn't make a difference. The only other thing I think might have contributed to all this is, when I had my hysterectomy I lost a lot of blood and when they stemmed it they also perforated my bladder, although they assured me it would heal ( had a cathater in for three weeks) you just never know. I will let you know if anything transpires. Good luck

The only antibiotics known to interact with Levo are the FLUOROQUINOLONE ones such as Ciprofloxacin, and others ending in OXACIN and these should be taken at least four hours away from Levo. There doesn't seem to be any evidence of Trimethropin interacting with Levo. I sometimes have to take Cipro. I also sometimes have to take Amoxycillin and I don't remember any warnings about that one.

You can Google "Trimethropin and Levothyroxine" for information.

If you don't already take probiotics it's a good idea to take a course to replace the good bacteria that the antibiotics will also kill alongside the bacteria causing your infection.

Hi thank you seasidesusie I never touch cipro as I know a couple of friends who have had horrible side effects from them even long after the course has finished :( I'm ...allergic to penicillin ,I have been taking procyan which is a cranberry probiotic capsule whip sometimes nips it in the bud before it takes hold ..but got the antibiotics just in case as I only have one kidney and worry it will travel to it and I will have more problems 🙁.. Yes thank you I do take bio-kult probiotics they do seem to help with the upset tummy that antibiotics give me ! I did google it but didn't find any info maybe that's why because they are fine with Levo ? Thank you for taking the time to reply

Take care thanks for your help xxxxxx

You're welcome :)

I must be lucky, I've not had any side effects from Ciprofloxacin up to now. I sometimes need it as I have COPD and have Pseudomonas colonised and that sometimes flares up.

I use BioKult too. Also take Molkosan as a pre-biotic to feed the probiotics.

Hi lynwin,

The best advice I can give regarding any long term anti-biotic is this, protect your digestive system by taking pre and pro -biotics at the same time. I was on long term antibiotics for rosacea and regret not knowing what it was doing to my gut.

Also PPi's were given to me long term. I am trying to put right the damage and it's a long haul. I am making my own bone broth and taking organic cyder vinigar.

Forewarned is forearmed. Healthspan do good pre- biotic fos and pro-biotics .

If using Healthspan always check for a discount code on the internet first it's worth a a few £'s off.

All the best x

Feel better soon. UTI's are not nice and like you in past had one infection after another. I still get mild symptons but only 1 full blown flare up last year after a few years of being free from infections. I put my improvement down to taking super strength concentrated cranberry Extract tablets daily.
