Can I ask about one of your reply statements... "The feeling of strangulation may be due to high TSH stimulating and inflaming remnant thyroid left after thyroidectomy."
I still have my thyroid but I get the strangulation feeling and it feels like I'm trying to breathe with a t-shirt over my throat if you know what I mean. Like I can't get a full clean breath. I don't smoke, never have but have dysthymia so usually put it down to a stress attack. Could this be my thyroid? I've also been craving milk a lot lately. I have low vitamin D levels so have to take Vit D everyday too.
I take quite a few meds for other things but the strangulation feeling can come on just sitting in my home without stressful provocation. I am also entering the menopause, I think.
I have asked several GP's to treat the patient not the blood test and although I've now found one who agrees they won't up my dosage very much saying I could end up with palpitations or worse.

If the strangulation feeling comes and goes within hours it's unlikely to be an inflamed thyroid gland. The feeling would persist for days/weeks until the inflammation subsided.
Palpitations can be caused by undermedication as well as overmedication. Undermedication can interrupt normal cycle and make you think you are having menopause, can cause shortness of breath and also increase anxiety. GP can do a blood test to tell whether you are peri or menopause.
If you post your recent thyroid results with the ranges (figures in brackets after the results) members will advise whether you are optimally medicated.
Thanks for that. I think a blood test a while ago showed I was starting the menopause. I had a hysterectomy in 1999 but still have the ovaries, (one has a collection attached to it but the surgeon said it's not life threatening.) I was given patches but stopped them when I heard about the cancer risks. I now use a suppository twice a week but recently have been getting a lot of hot flushes.
I'm a very complicated case apparently. I have a lot of health problems. I just wish I could get the right dosage of what I really need instead of being tried on this and that.
Hello Cannylass,
Welcome to our forum and sorry to hear that you are not feeling well.
Are you medicating on Levothyroxine for hypothyroidism ?
Have you had thyroid antibodies TPOAb and TGAb tested?
Thyroid hormones are required for every cell in our bodies and low levels have far reaching effects and could easily be the cause of anxiety, breathlessness or irrational periods.
The following link explains how hypothyroidism can interest with breathing patterns
Thank You for your reply I will take a look at those links. I am on Thyroxin for an underactive thyroid but will be pushing my GP for a proper diagnosis or go private.
My feeling of throat pressure, turned out to be my esophagus, in spasms. Because my thyroid ultrasound showed a small thyroid, at the time. I get a choked feeling when my stomach is flaring up with reflux and not digesting.
