Does low vit d level and low b12 cause under active thyroid or is it the opposite I mean is low vit d due to hypothyroidism
Vit d and hypo: Does low vit d level and low b1... - Thyroid UK
Vit d and hypo
...when Hypo - because the metabolism is inefficient - and usually accompanied by gut issues - ( known or unknown ! ) - then the absorption of vitals is compromised. On the other hand as VitD for instance is involved in the functioning of the immune system then LowD could be the cause of auto-immune thyroiditis.
The video posted yesterday did cover that point - although the presenter felt that LOW D was the cause of many conditions - although not proven.
I myself suffered Gut TB in my 20's and that is also linked with low VitD.
I have always believed that vitd deficiency was one of the dude effects of being hypo. I developed low vit d after being out on thyroxine. However many Gps ignore the association between the two.
I don't know the answer to your question, but I would suggest that you take sublingual vitamin D - a mouth spray perhaps - to bypass any absorption problems. I don't think this is available on prescription, but it is easily bought and not expensive. This is essential during the winter months.
And expose skin during the summer months. Remember, sunshine from September to April in the UK is not strong enough to make vitamin D in your skin, and even when sun is strong you have to avoid showering for a while after sunbathing or you will wash it off. But don't let yourself burn.
There is some relationship between D and iron going on that science doesn't understand yet.
Keep an eye on your iron levels. In one piece of research on chicks, D raised their ability to absorb metals. Chicks are not humans, but nevertheless it could just be that you may need to make sure your body is being supplied with sensible amounts of useful metals, iron, magnesium, zinc - and that you are not stripping lead based paint while being iron deficient and taking high doses of D.
A person can be vitamin D deficient and not be hypo. In that video posted two days ago by Marz, apparently 73% of Americans are vitamin D insufficient or deficient. Certainly 73% of Americans are not hypothyroid. But can you imagine if that high of a percent don't have enough vitamin D and the latitude is much further south than England, what percentage of people in the UK are low in vitamin D? Dr. Grimes is a GI specialist and he has an excellent lecture on the impact of vitamin D deficiency on the gut function.
Why take the risk of having problems when vitamin D is very cheap to buy?
Out of interest, has anyone got any evidence that hypothyroidism causes low stomach acid?
I like the point about people being reluctant to expose a lot of skin to sunlight. And as you say, the scaremongering about skin cancer doesn't help.
This might fit the bill :
gut.bmj.com/content/8/6/582...
I have to point out though that it is old - published 1967.
If you use Google Scholar : scholar.google.co.uk/schhp?...
and do a search for
hypothyroidism + achlorhydria
hypothyroidism + hypochlorhydria
you'll get plenty of references. But it is really noticeable that they are all old. Research into the symptoms of hypothyroidism is (sadly) really, really unfashionable and appears to have been for decades.
