  • As far as I know supplements should not be taken with any thyroid hormones (except vitamin C which helps convert T4 to t3). It is advised to leave 4 hours between taking them and supplements/medication.

Spirulina is rich in iodine which is contra-indicated with thyroid medications. Excerpt:

Some people are allergic to the iodine contained in spirulina, and you should talk to your doctor before self-medicating with it. This is especially important if you have a thyroid condition because too much iodine can be harmful for those with hyperthyroidism -- an overactive thyroid -- as well as those with Hashimoto’s disease, an immune system-related thyroid disorder. People who are most likely to benefit from spirulina are those with hypothyroidism or subclinical hypothyroidism, but even these people need to be careful, especially if they eat a lot of iodine-rich foods. A study published in 2012 in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" found that while iodine usually helps stimulate the thyroid, too much iodine -- more than about 800 micrograms per day -- can actually cause the thyroid to become less active.

  • i suffer from myxedema hypothyroidism :s will that be ok?:S i speak to my doc on monday

  • it is also auto immune too:s

  • I have hypothyroidism and I wouldn't take food which contains iodine but that is my personal view. We have had similar questions previously and this is a link which may be helpful:

  • That is Hashi's. And it says above 'too much iodine can be harmful for those with hyperthyroidism -- an overactive thyroid -- as well as those with Hashimoto’s disease, an immune system-related thyroid disorder.' That's you.

I have Hashi's and no way would I take spirulina. You are already taking iodine when you take your thyroid hormone replacement. You can have too much of a good thing, you know, especially when it comes to iodine!

  • Do you have Hashimoto's? Iodine can make some people so much more ill. I would be aware of your symptoms. I do not take supplements containing Iodine, just to be on the safe side.

  • while i wasnt taking levo i bought some sea kelp from holland in barrett as i was hoping it would help with my hair and skin condition. was then told by a medic best not take then as it may affect a future blood reading.

  • Even before I had Hashi's I took Spirulina and it made me so hyper......I wouldn't mess with it. Susita

  • ok no worries i never felt any symptoms off it oh well

  • All the best to you...xo Susita
