What Causes High Folate Serum Levels?

Folate refers to a water-soluble B-complex vitamin. The causes of high folate serum levels include pernicious anaemia. This is a resultant of impaired utilization of folate caused by this type of anaemia. Increased food intake or consumption can also lead to your folate serum levels being high.

This was found on ask.com.

Sorry but please remind me - you have been suffering with palpitations haven't you? Do these symptoms ring any bells with you:

Symptoms of anaemia may include fatigue and lethargy, dyspnoea, faintness, palpitations and headache. Vitamin B12 deficiency may present with unexplained neurological symptoms - eg, paraesthesia, numbness, cognitive changes or visual disturbance.

If so then you may be looking at pernicious anaemia.

Does this make any sense to you.

Have you ever supplemented B12?

Take a look at this question on the pernicious anaemia (PA) site from browny - also a member of this site - and maybe you could PM her and ask her more.

healthunlocked.com/pasoc/qu...

Your ferritin levels are still low and need increasing but I don't know much about adrenal levels so cant answer that one.

Sorry I cant be of more help - maybe ask another question and head it something like "Could this be pernicious anaemia" and then hopefully hampster1 will pick up on it. Has anyone mentioned PA before to you?

Your raise your ferritin by taking iron tablets - ferrous sulphate 200mg £1.40 for 28 - from any chemist but you MUST take these with vitC or your body will be unable to absorb the iron and your levels wont rise. I use Lamberts vitc powder, which is expensive but one tub has lasted me nearly a year.

If I had a folate result like this I would be back down the doctors asking why I have been told this is normal. I would also be confessing to supplementing B12 as if you hadn't this may have given your doctor a more accurate picture. When you post the other question please mention that you have supplemented B12 in the past as this will make it clearer for people who may answer you.

Don't ask, tell him - if you ask you will get a no, if you tell him and are forceful enough you will probably get a yes.

Read as much as you can about PA before your appt to see if it seems likely to you and maybe join the PA healthunlocked site and ask a question on there.

Have a read of this as well

So you were supplementing B12 up until a few months ago? Then you really do need to go back to your GP and explain these things and ask him for tests for PA - I don't know what they are so I cant advice - I think one is an active B12 test but the link I sent you from

the PA site mentions another test.

Don't let your GP dismiss this as it can be serious if left untreated, that's if you do have PA of course.

better bodies vit b12 not sure on strength but was 1 a day, could they be the cause for the high reading? ill be sure to ask for a PA blood test, may allso be the answer to everything else thats wrong

No they wont be the cause of your high folate reading unless they have folic acid in the, check your bottle and let me know.

What they will have done is raised your B12 blood levels so that the doctor will think you do not have a B12 problem and so will not have diagnosed you with low B12 where as if you had not have supplemented B12 then this would have been picked up.

It now all depends if your supplements have folic acid in the or not.

ingredients are diacalcium phosphate, cellulose, stearic acid, silicon dioxde, magnesium stearate, vitamin b12

Right, so no folic acid.

What I would do is ask another question on here and on the PA site to see what response you get and I would also take the supplements to your next GP appt, with as much info on PA as you can, explain to him that you think supplementing B12 has given him an untrue picture and ask for an active B12 test. How long were you taking these supplements for?

We might be totally barking up the wrong tree with this but there has to be some explanation on why you feel so unwell and maybe, just maybe, this is it.
