I am switching from compounded armour (been on for 7 yrs) to Thyro-Gold and wondered if anyone has done this? How did you transfer over and how is it going for you?

We have had several people ask about Thyro-Gold but I do not recall anyone here deciding to go that route. It would appear to work out relatively expensive when all costs are factored in.

Wondering why you have been getting "compounded armour" rather than bona fide Forest Pharmaceuticals Armour? Or Nature-Throid or Erfa.

During the great desiccated thyroid shortage some people seemed to get some very odd products and/or effects from various products supplied by "compounding pharmacies" in the USA. Including some who were supplied with synthetic levothyroxine and liothyronine with no desiccated thyroid in sight!

I switched to Armour back in I think 09 when they reformulated it and changed the fillers/binders and I could no longer take it sublingually. I now have great concerns because the Pigs in the USA are fed GMO soy and corn. The side effects to the immune system from that and the pesticides they use have concerned me for some time. After looking online for options I discovered Thyro-Gold is from New Zealand Bovine and they are not using GMO products or anything harmful like what is allowed here. And actually it will be cheaper for me as well.....

Well the best of luck to you.

After a while, maybe you'd care to put up a post about your experiences - whatever happens. It could be interesting to quite a number.

Yes, I have made the switch from 3+ grains of Armour to Thyro-gold. I used Thyrogold briefly when I was looking for a doctor in my area who would prescribe NDT as Synthroid did not work for me. I felt great on 4 300mg capsules of Thyrogold for maybe 2 weeks. I then switched to Armour and started feeling worse for a month - brain fog, emotionally unstable, arthritis. I am now back on 4 capsules of Thyrogold for a week and seeing improvement. I may need to purchase a bottle of the 150mg capsules as 4 300mg seems a little too much - I am having difficulty falling asleep at midnight. The only negative is that my cost for Armour (after insurance) was $10 per month & my Thyrogold is about $75.

Hi I recently changed to thyroid gold I was informed that one capsule is 1.5 grains is this correct as my weight is rocketing I was on 4 grains armour plus 20mgc t3

The 150mg size has only been produced for a short time. When I began, I only had the 300mg option. I have read that most people that are borderline-hypo (maybe a TSH of 4.5) do best on 150mg. My TSH was 14.7 so I started on 600mg and worked my way up to 1200mg until my body, mind, and soul were healthy. If I have difficulty falling asleep at night, I take only 3 1/2 the next morning (the capsules are easy to "unscrew" and I empty half of the capsule into my mouth and close it back up for another day)

Thanks for getting back to me....My hypo tsh needs 150mg I reckon so I bought that....apparently tho there is a backlog of orders at the moment as the product is 2 weeks behind so I will be waiting a wee while to start trying it....if my levo keeps giving me probs.

I have been really pleased with TG. I am at a dosage of 150 twice a day. I could probably increase it a little more to tweak it but I don't want to get in to taking more than that right now. I am due to have some blood work done soon and will be curious to see how switching has affected that.

Hi there. Very interesting. Please tell me what the blood results are when you get them. I was taking just 2 x 150 in the morning. Do you think I should be doing what you are doing taking one in morning and one later. What times do you take them. I bought 300 just in case I want to take just one in the morning but maybe I would fair better taking one 1 x150 in morn and one x 150 in evening. Sorry for not getting back sooner I never saw your reply till now. By the way what tsh were you when you started? :) Look forward to your reply ...take care

Hey. Have been diagnosed hypothyroid since 2011. Have never treated it with anything as doctor wanted to go synthroid. My Tsh has peaked at 5.6 usually stays around 4.5. My question for you is how is the thyro gold working for you? Are you still taking it? How do you determine correct dosage etc? Thanks

Hi. Did your blood work show any changes? Are you still having good results with thyrogold? I am considering trying it. Thanks

Hiya....I tried it but I dont think it was working for me or I needed to take a bigger amount (and it is too expensive to buy big amounts for me really) so having to go back on levo for now....as my tsh went up to 6.1 after I went on it and it was down to 3.8 when I was taking 50 levo....so feeling awful and trying a different thing now and taking 100 levo...although it is worth a try, I think ,if you only need a tiny amount and are sure to to test your bloods regularly to see if it works...maybe it will work for you as it does for some folk I hear. But we dont know alot of folk tried it on here so we need to keep in touch and see if it works or not.

The lady told me that 150 thyro gold is same as 50 levo approx but with added t3 of course so I did what she told me and took one 300 thyrogold or two 150 thyrogold for a good while....it didnt seem to be working and dont want to go higher than that really.

Hi Anuba and jbama21... I never got back for the blood work at the end of last year like I was supposed to do. My TSH was 7.6 but the last time it was tested I was switching from Armour to TG and I was dosing it wrong. I really feel better at dosing 150 twice a day. I take my first dose around 7am and try to remember the 2 nd dose around 2-3. I need to get in and have some blood work but have been procastinating! Hope you find it works for you..,

I was taking 300 in morning for a while but maybe wasnt enough as my tsh went up to 6.1 higher than ever .....I dont think I can afford to take more than that.....I am back on levo for now although doc is testing my t3 in case I have a conversion thing anyway. Goodluck and keep in touch as I would be very very interested in your new results....I dont think I was taking mine properly or something or it was just not working for me I dunno.....please tell us what happens.

Thanks a lot. Im going to give TG a try and see what happens

Thanks for helping. I would like to go on Armour but my primary Dr seems to believe synthroid is the only treatment so I may give TG a shot since you and others have good results with it. I have to do something as my thyroid seems to only be getting worse with time and I'm only 26.

jbama21 profile image
jbama21 in reply to gladys327

I meant to include in last reply, have you tried monitoring your treatment using the basal body temp method.I read briefly on Dr Lowes website about it. I may try monitoring mine prior to starting TG for 1-2 weeks and then see if there are changes post trt

Anuba in reply to jbama21

I actually went up in my Tsh while on it.....I would try it but please please monitor yourself.....it didnt work for me....goodluck.......just be really careful as it made me feel worse and my tsh went up.....if you only have a little thyroid prob or v early stages then maybe it may work....keep an eye on yourself tho.

Can you supplement your armour with thyroid gold? Just curious if you can take both.

I have been considering Thyro Gold lately. It may be expensive, but so are Armour, Erfa etc. And I like the fact that the raw material comes from NZ cows that have not been feed GMO corn or soy. It seems soy can make estrogen dominance worse, and estrogen dominance, from what I've read, can wreak havoc on the whole endocrine system and have quite serious consequences in the long run...

If pigs in the US are fed GMO corn and soy and God knows what else, I can only imagine what they are fed in countries like Thailand...

We may be talking about tiny amounts here but, if this is a drug you have to take every day for the rest of your life, we could be talking about considerable amounts in the end...also, the late Dr. Lowe seemed to know what he was doing, and I trust he must have had a good reason to choose thyroid powder from NZ cows for his products.

Anecdotal evidence seems to indicate that a 300 mg capsule of TG is the approximate equivalent of 1 grain of prescription NDT, so it seems quite potent.

Also, bovine thyroid seems to contain a little more T3 and T4 per grain than porcine thyroid, which may be a good thing for those of us who seem to need quite a lot for complete symptom relief.

If anyone is on TG and doing well on it, could you please tell me more about your experiences, how much you ended up taking, etc (PM is fine)?

Interesting points Anna. I have Hashimoto's have been on Armour for almost 10 years. My weight kept going up and up and experienced Hypo symptoms no matter the dosage. I recently met someone who follows the eat right for your blood type diet. My blood type is O positive and the literature states that type O's should never consume Pork. So I decided to give Thyro-Gold a try. I've only been on 2 days already down couple lbs, where my weight never budged on Armour. Curious did you try the Thyro-Gold if so what has your experience been?
