Is your GP psychic - how does she know you don't need your vitamins tested - has she got some hidden gift that tells her, just by looking at someone, if they are or are not deficient in certain vitamins. I'm sorry to say you have been fobbed off and treated very badly just so your surgery can save a bit of money - I was hoping this wouldn't happen to you but it is so common now days that we have all experience some level of GP's money saving strategy.
So now we know why you were started on such a high dose, with a TSH of over 40 and a FT4 of only 4.9 now wonder you were tired.
Did you get your iron blood tests results while you were there?

Did you have MCV done (mean corpuscular volume)? This can sometimes point to a B12 deficiency. I had no problem getting serum B12 done as I had symptoms like tingling legs and feet.
Thats seems nicely in the middle of the range, so doesn't look like any problems can be construed from that. The only reason I asked was mine was way over the top of the range and this can indicate things like pernicious anemia.
i read your previous post and wanted to say hi, i was diagnosed 4 months ago, i have a baby daughter too she is nearly 1.
I do think you were started on too high a dose, would 125 not be a big shock to your system all at once? i was started on 50mcg. and my tsh was 118 on diagnosis, T4 4.9!! But my levels came down very quickly, im now on 75mcg and feeling very well. Perhaps you should see another doctor? esp re your vitamin levels, a good doc should be keen to check those after a diagnosis of hypothyroidism.
Really hope your feeling better soon, i felt worse before i felt better...and its tough when you have a little one to look after. Hugs, Laura x
I agree, 125 is not a starting dose, and would also suggest seeing a different doctor A TSH of 40 is not that high in the grand scheme of things that would require a higher starting dose. The recommended starting dose is 50mcg or 25mcg if there are contributory factors such as heart problems.
Hi all I questioned dose again and got told its right so I don't know and I have a print out of full blood test but I don't know what is what so what would iron be listed as?
Put them all up with the ranges and you will be given good feedback. I also think 125mcg is far too high for a starting dose, question this with your Dr. My Gp has done Serum B12 test several times, you can get most tests done also with Blue Horizon but can be costly.
I was started on 200mcg T⁴ by my oncologist. I can't tell you how I'll it made me. Every 3 months it was reduced by25mcg & is now 100mcg which is less brutal.
FT³ 3.1 (range 3.2-6.2) Endo seemingly not bothered by low T³ & won't do rT³ so I'm tweaking doses of T⁴ & T³ and hope to find optimal dose going on symptoms & how well or not I feel.
Yes your TSH ix very high and fT 4 very low, but I too think 125mvg is way to high a starting dose.
In a way. The worse you are to start with, the more of a shock to the system it is to suddenly have thyroid hormones available again.
My initial test results weren't as bad as yours (TSH 18.0) and I was started on 50mcg. It mad me feel dreadful with high levels of anxiety, headaches and feeling spaced out.
It is much better to start on a low dose and then gradually build up. It is common to stay on a dose for 6 weeks, then have a blood test and then adjust your dose in 25mcg increments until you get to the right level for you.
Some people are fine on such a high starting dose, but many wouldn't be. I would see another GP if I were you and get a second opinion. Xx
Hi thanks for reply I've seen two doctors already and questioned it both times and been told that dose is fine. I've not got anxiety but awful leg pain unbearable in fact I rng pharmacy who have told me too speak to gp again and I just want to crawl into bed
Has the pain started since being on thyroxine? Some people do seem to suffer with this and there does seem to be a connection with taking T4. If it was me, I would try stop[ing the thyroxine for a couple of days and then restart on 50mcg and see if that makes any difference to the leg pains. It is quite likely that you will need 125mcg or more eventually, but it is very unusual to start on such a high dose. xx
