Any recommendations for Iron supplements?

I had a recent blood test reading of

Folate (B9) 4.8 (4 - 18)

Ferritin 49 (20 - 180)

so need to supplement both I guess (but definitely the B9) - can anyone recommend a good make for this and suggest dosage? (assuming that's allowed on here??)

I can tell you what I take. I take Spatone for the iron and one of the Swanson's B vitamin complexes. This contains folic acid but you might need more. Swanson's and Jarrows are both good makes but I am sure there are others.

If you are going to supplement with folic acid (which you need to do) you also need to make sure you are supplementing with B12. Folic acid produces a biproduct called homocysteine which can cause problems if it is allowed to build up. B12 converts homocysteine into methionine which is an essential amino acid. It is important to always remember to supplement with B12 whenever you supplement with folic acid. I take the Jarrows 5000mcg methyl B12 and find it very good.

I hope that helps

Thanks for this - I actually have B12 jabs every three months but that doesn't seem enough so I also supplement daily - my blood test results from 3 weeks ago show me right 'at the top' so presumably no worries there. I have ordered some B9 so fingers crossed although I am not too sure what effect it will have - I assume I will just feel less tired?

I am taking Hubner Iron Vital F. It has Iron, B1, B2, B6, Niacin, B12 and C. It has made an enormous difference to me. I am not as tired and my hair has stopped falling out. I was taking Spatone before this but it didn't make any difference to how I felt.

I haven't had a blood test since starting on it so I don't what difference it has made to my levels but it has certainly made me feel better.

Hi Mouse, I'm going to give this stuff a go. I like the fact it's got lots of B Vitamins. Hopefully it will help my hair, which is not growing and thinning rapidly. Thanks for this
