Can you gain weight with a wheat allergy i know ive asked so many questions this week but I am trying to find out WHY I am not absorbing T3.

I am getting hypo symptoms on 120mcg dose

Have just emailed your questions to a girl from this site (she doesn't come on here much anymore) who knows a hell of a lot about wheat/gluten allergies so hopefully she will answer you soon. I have been speaking to her about you and our PM's so she does know a bit of background. She is very good on this sort of thing and this is who has taught me an awful lot.

Me too, I am in the same boat, no matter how high I go on T3, the symptoms are remaining of low thyroid.

Feel terrible today.

Yes wheat and any other food that you are intolerant to will cause weight gain and inflammation in the body, plus it will lower the basal temperature, consequently lowering the metabolism.

I am on a much lower dose of T3 40mcg daily, but most of last year I felt that the thyroid hormone was not getting to where it needed to go. I had done well on T4 only for nearly 20 years and then things started to go wobbly about 13 years ago..... my body overstimulated at the drop a hat and my sleeping was totally messed up (still not normal but improved) my thyroid levels were good and I was not hyper in any way other than this total overstimulation. With hindsight I think my body was totally TOXIC and this was the effect, a lot of cortisol production along with plenty of adrenaline....I was also a total stress case!!!!!

In 2006 I had a very small breast cancer which was a very BIG wake up call, one I am deeply grateful for.......it transformed my life for the better :)

In desperation last year I went to see a consultant in London privately, he very quickly suggested I had chronic food allergies....I was shocked!!!!! 3 days later I stopped dairy and within 48 hours the abdominal bloating went ( I used to go out at the waist!). 3 days after that I stopped wheat and 3 days later I had to stop oats. Over the next month or so I also worked on excluding all gluten from my diet.

I felt so much better and within the first 4 days I had last 3 to 4 lbs that I had gained 4/5 months previously, which were not shifting no matter what I tried. I continued with my exclusions for about a month and after much deliberation I decided to do the elimination diet that the consultant had given me.......I was amazed, it was like my energy had been turbo charged and another 3 lbs in weight was lost :) The hardest part of the diet was introducing foods each day after the 12 days of pre set foods..... this area I do not feel I have done very successfully and know from my weight and temperatures that I am still eating foods that my body is not entirely happy with......

From bloods that were done by the consultant it is likely that I am coeliac, if I'm not then I am VERY, VERY intolerant to gluten and dairy, a tiny amount of either makes my tummy feel heavy and poisoned, saps my energy and will often send me back to bed for a daytime sleep, it also leaves me feeling foggy and sometimes quite down and the weight creeps UP. When I get the eating right I feel alive, vital, clear and full of energy and complete well being, with a lovely flat, light feeling abdomen :) This is what I strive for!

The more I read the more I am convinced that gluten is a NO NO for anyone with autoimmune illness. The more I read about wheat the more I wonder why ANYONE chooses to eat it (YES CONTROVERSIAL but my opinion LOL). The longer we live with one intolerance the more likely we have many more intolerances occur.

There is loads more I can offer so ask if you have other questions.

My own experience has shown me that 99.9% gluten free is NOT enough, and going gluten free for a few weeks or month or 2 is not enough. I suffered with constipation on and off all of my life....I put it down to HYPO.....it has taken 5 1/2 months of wheat free, gluten free, dairy free and a few other foods free for my digestive system to heal and function healthily. I have heard others say that digestive issues have taken 18 months to heal.

Whatever you choose to do take it step by step, one thing at a time and when you are comfortable introduce the next change you want to make.....the all or nothing approach usually sets us up for a great big FALL (I've done it many times in the past). Be kind to yourself, if you stray know that you can start again in the next moment or the next day. Try not to let yourself get hungry, this is when we start to crave and eat the things that do not serve us.......

I can honestly say that I now look at foods and see them as poisons or medicines for me and only very occasionally think about eating something that will make me feel ill as soon I think about how ill it will make me the desire for it GOES!

The connection of all illness to the health of our Gut is very closely linked.....when the very first cell divides one half becomes the brain and the other the digestive system, that says to me how closely linked and how important they both are and most especially the digestive system. Main stream medicine does not really acknowledge the importance of the gut, but Functional and Integrative medicine absolutely do, it is pretty much the first place they start!!!!!

Thanks sue I'm going to read all your blogs that Moggie has highlighted below. Thank you so much. I have just started (past 7-10 days) to go gluten free. I have felt for sometime that I am gluten sensitive. I had a positive coeliac blood test but negative biopsy a couple of years ago and a borderline coeliac test just recently. I am feeling a lot better even tho it is just a short time since I've made the change. Thanks again for all the info :-)

Feel free to ask any questions, anytime.... I have recently found this web site to be really helpful elanaspantry.com the bread 2.0 is EXCELLENT I often eat it for breakfast dipped in nice olive oil (I'm dairy intolerant too!) and it is great with home made veggie soups.....

The Paleo Chocolate Brownie is to die for and the blueberry muffins are given the thumbs up by my 17 year old!!!!!!

I had a positive coeliac blood test and the GP suggested referral to gastro nearly 4 months AFTER I had eliminated wheat, gluten and dairy. I told him politely to s*d off!!!! i think i would be bedridden if I ate serious amounts of gluten for 6 weeks....the inadvertent minuscule amounts have been bad enough, it would seem the cleaner I get the greater the impact of a 'contamination' One of the most interesting things is how seriously it impacts my mental state, I become really 'down' :) I'm happy with NO WHEAT OR GLUTEN..... I feel well mot of the time...well it beats having to go back to bed nearly every day and sometimes twice a day!!!!!!!

Where do you buy your glutenfree foods from? I have tried a few different breads and they are ok for toast but you cant eat them as they are because they are so dry. Thankyou

Hi Mandy-white,

I don't buy very much gluten free, if any. In my opinion none of them are very healthy....all very processed. I make my own bread this is the recipe link

They are both delicious and will last me about a week. They are not cheap but then neither is gluten free, bread £4.72 and Brownie £8.03. I do use organic products as far as possible. The almond flour is ground almond. I buy the blanched almonds (organic) and grind them in the dry bowl for the Vitamix. The Vitamix is VERY expensive I invested in one with some insurance money I had mature last year and I am very happy I did :)

About the only thing I do buy now is a gluten free granola, but I think this has a very short life on my shopping list.... I am not convinced that I do well with any grains.....it is certainly something for me to have only occasionally.

I think the secret is to eat foods that do not have a label ie they are not packaged and if they are you are able to understand and pronounce all the indredients....... sounds a bit daunting.....it's all about transition and taking baby steps.....start with one meal a week and increase when you are comfortable..... don't give up because you slip....start again instead.....

I feel MUCH better! I hope you will very soon!!!!

thankyou for your reply. I do cut out as much gluten as possible but i also cheat sometimes to make life easier. Each time i cheat i do get side effects and so i want to try cutting it out all together. It is such a pain though if no one else in the family need to be glutenfree. i will definately try the bread and brownies thankyou xx

The other 3 in my family are not gluten free either, little by little I am moving them in that direction :) My 17 year old definitely needs to be she has my sensitive immune system......it all takes time...

I do find that the cleaner I get from Gluten the more I react..... we really do need to be 100% free 99.9% sadly is not enough :(

The bread is great as you could even carry a couple of slices with you as back up......I absolutely love it and it toasts well.....lasts about a week in the fridge, i wrap it in paper and then put it in a zip lock bag.....

There are lots of things on Elana's pantry that look good have only tried these and blueberry muffins for my daughter so far!!!! Decided to try the free recipes before I bought yet another recipe book!!!!!!!!!
